Currently doing a 25,000 word dissertation - the data collection itself has taken a month, and I have the next three months to write it all up.

I can understand the disillusionment with uni. Back at school there was little in the way of information about other options. In hindsight I probably could have done some sort of apprenticeship or enrty-level job and been in a better position now, but in reality in the future the two degrees I'll have at the end of the summer will help me in the long run.

One other thing to consider is the fact that a lot of other people have a degree these days, so in a competetive job market you are at a severe disadvantage if you do not have some sort of degree or diploma.

Fortunately for me I missed the increases in tuition fees for both the undergrad and postgrad courses, so if I'd needed to pay £9k+ per year for the first 3 years, and another £6k on top of that for the MSc, then I probably wouldn't have gone to uni.

I loved my time at university, got to do all sorts of remarkable things and meet some great people, many of whom I still know. I was finally able to make my own decisions and at last didn't think I knew more than the people teaching me. Most of all, I was surrounded by people who wanted to be there.

But I should never have gone.

Why? I am not temprementally suited to anything where I have to make decisions for myself, nor do I have the strength of will to carry things to conclusions. I get bored and sidetracked easily. As a result, I am completely unreliable. Really, I should have been told that I just couldn't hack it and pushed into a dead-end job where I could only screw up my own life, not the lives of everybody around me. My metier is stacking shelves and packing bags, not research science. I'm clever enough, but I have absolutely no sense or self-discipline. Basically, I had a nice waste of time up there, as did a lot of other people. It left me an overqualified, useless nobody. That's not even considering all the money I wasted on it.
