Hi Everyone,
This is my last 378 for sight. I have been to Clapham Junction, Stratford, and Barking many times in recent months, but this unit never shows.
RTT and other systems do not show LO unit allocations.
Is this unit out of service, or have I simply been unlucky?
Thanks for any advice.

Gospel Oak Barking line is run by 710s.
Clapham Junction/Richmond Stratford is majority overhead wire powered and therefore exclusively 378/2 run it as they are dual-voltage whereas 378/1 are third rail only.

You’ll find 378153 primary on East London Line services. Stand anywhere between Dalston Jct and Surrey Quays inclusive for a couple of hours and if it’s out, you’ll see it, the only exception being if it’s one of the two or three occasionally appearing alongside 710s on Watford DC.

To clarify, 378153 will NEVER go to Stratford or Barking.

There is a method which allows you to sometimes determine certain 378 allocations. The depot sidings at New Cross Gate, Silwood and Wembley are signalled in such a way that the unit numbers are put in the berth descriptions. Therefore you can track a unit for the day knowing where it was stabled overnight and which service it subsequently went out on.

Complex, but explained here
https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/non-urgent-tops-requests.202237/page-482#post-5555812

By this method, 378153 started on 3A00 0503 New Cross Gate Carriage Servicing Depot - Crystal Palace this morning

From, that you should be able to use RTT to trace where it is now.

How would a 378/1 even get to the DC lines from the third rail area? Has this has ever actually happened?

Yes, OK, maybe that’s just /2 then. Thinking about it I don’t think I’ve seen a /1 at Euston.

So the OP can get it from any Overground station between Dalston and Surrey Quays if ever it’s out.

The single voltage units have never been on the dc lines because they lack a tripcock. The best bet to see 153 would be to go to Surrey Queys

378s don’t use tripcocks anymore
No but the 378/1s are still confined to the east. Because getting them into Willesden is impossible unless they are dragged.

Next week I’ll see if I can find where 153 is running

PTSO or platform depending on the weather
378.153 (along with the other /1's) can be found anywhere between Dalston Junction, Surrey Quays and New Cross/Crystal Palace/West Croydon, or between Dalston Junction and Clapham Junction via Peckham Rye. So in theory, the OP should have been able to see it at Clapham Junction.

Unless it's had an accident or in for exam/repair or repaint at Ilford (if 378's are still being done there)

By my reckoning, it should be at Dalston Junction right now working 9C60 2017 Highbury & Islington to West Croydon.

I’ve been at work the last few days and haven’t seen 153 in the shed, definitely haven’t had it for an exam as we’ve had all /2s this week. I think it’s due and exam soon though.

the only 378/1 which operated over on the DC London Euston to Watford was 378151 right at the front end of operation, when the unit was used for de-icing purposes when Class 378/2 units with de-icing equipment had not been commissioned.

if you look at open time trains - and maps for New Cross gate depot / silwood- you can see which units are stabled where - and what is in the maintenance shed.
