Was it not a class 317? I have a picture of it in an old A4 size Hard Back book called ScotRail produced around 1986-87.
I'm not sure about this
317335 was displayed at the launch of the Ayrline Electrification in 1983, there were no Class 318 units at the time

Also, a Class 318 did not make it to the Ayr Open Day (just not ready in time), instead it was a Class 303 and 314
318258 was at the Kilmarnock Open Day, which was a surprise

There were a few other Class 317 units used in Scotland, for staff training from 1984 to 1985
These operated between Shields Road and Carlisle
Around the same time a single Class 318 was put into static display in Platform 5 at Glasgow Central, and over several weeks various units performed this
Once the Class 318 units had been accepted and driver training commenced the Class 317 units returned south, but they were stored for some time at Shields just in case not enough Class 318 units were delivered and driver training could be completed

Equally, I doubt a Class 318 would have operated in passenger use so soon after delivery and simply to move it to Scotland

The 19:10 Leeds > Bradford Forster Square seems to be booked a 321 instead of a 333.

Well then it was certainly a 317, not that I bothered to write down the number: Not for the first time then to ayr but very likely the only time a 317 or anyother unit of the day did the royal scot!

We had the tops report from a guy at Mossend office and saw the booking, so I should have remembered it was a 317 then (? if not the first 318 built?)

We all sat on it terminal platform at Ayr station nearest the entrance on the saturday of Ayr Rail Day or what ever it was called in 1985 ( 31 august 1985). Eat my "piece" IIRC on board. There was a kettle out that day too, which I vaguely remember goign past as we were at the Depot.

By that time we were more interested in crawling around various powerunits inside locos at the depot than spotting MU numbers ( which I gave up doing in 1982, theerafter just hoping 303-311 or 314s would get me back from moves aroon glesga!)

Juice for services was supplied in sept 1986 south of kilwinning BTW.

hmmmm, ok!

But the Royal Scot did start from Ayr in this period, mainly to act as a commuter from Ayr to Glasgow Central, unsure of all the calling points. It was formed with the usual mix of Mk1,2,3's and run with a 47 on front as Ayr was not electrified yet. A class 87 would release the 47 and take the train on to London Euston.

Extensions of London Trains to other parts of Scotland is often possible as the unit/train would be doing nothing else until its departure. So it would make sense if they extended a Pendolino from Central in the evening peak to Ayr and could return in the morning peak and form a London or Birmingham Train, as it wouldn't be doing anything else.

Not a bad idea as ive heard plenty of Ayrshire folk connecting of a Virgin Train to Ayr Services .Doubt it would happen though!

I don't know of any current unique workings but I know of a couple that used to exist:

06:3x Chester to Manchester via Warrington: Class 150* (continued to Chester via Altrincham from Piccadilly platform 13)
06:5x Chester to Manchester via Altrincham: Class 175 (continued to Llandudno via Warrington from Piccadilly platform 14)

What's even more unusual is the above continued even after FNW lost the Manchester to Chester via Warrington line to the Wales franchise.

* I think other FNW 150s were used on early morning/late night services on that line in multiple as a way of stock movement, so it is only unique in that it was only single 150 in service on the line.

The 1718 Cardiff Central - Maesteg service (1V59) is booked for a 175 (although this is because it is an extension of the 1238 from Holyhead). As a result, this will operate the return journey, the 1820 Maesteg - Cardiff Central service (2L56).

The 0700 Cardiff Central - Manchester Piccadilly service is booked for a Voyager, although again this is only an extension of what would be the 0800 from Bristol Temple Meads. This service (1M25) is the daily Voyager serving Cardiff.

The 0532 Holyhead - Cardiff Central service (1V31) is booked for MK3 stock pulled by a Class 57. This is also the case for the 1615 (1W91) Cardiff - Holyhead service.

Also, the 0619 Bristol Temple Meads - Cardiff Central service (2U02) is operated by a 158 and a 153, and this returns as the 0800 Cardiff Central - Paignton service (2C67). As a result of this, this is the only 158 diagram west of Exeter.

I presume there's a very early morning 220-worked Birmingham to Nottingham turn, as that unit forms the return service to Bournemouth.

It's actually the 0600 Derby - Nottingham service (2A00), which arrives into Nottingham at 0621, which then has only a fifteen minute wait-over before forming the 0637 to Bournemouth (1O18).

Didn't think it was a Birmingham service because the first direct train from Birmingham to Nottingham is the 0619 (1D50), which doesn't get into Nottingham until 0741. Of course, the Nottingham - Bournemouth service departs at 0637, so that's too late.

It must have to leave Central Rivers very early, at say just before 0500, to go up to Derby, be prepared for service and to depart at 0600.

18:3x Preston to Manchester Airport and the returning 19:48 Man Airport to Blackpool North booked a 156 (with 142/150 sometimes turning up). Both TPE services, replacing the usual 185 and before that 175 stock.

Also during winter timetable the 20:48 Man Airport to Blackpool was booked for a 158 Fridays only, with the 06:36 Blackpool to Airport on the Saturday morning also booked for a 158.

AFAIK currently there is a 158 booked on a late evening Blackpool to Victoria and another vice versa. Otherwise I don't think 158s touch the Manchester to Preston line.

Cannot recall the date but a few years back there used to be a regular Sunday working for a Class 158 on the Falmouth branch. They are still passed on the branch and also on the St Ives branch but NOT in the bay platform at St Erth. One went down to Lelant a few years back to rescue a failed unit.

A few I can think of are:

0638 Sanderstead - Victoria via Norbury - 4-car 455
1657 Charing Cross - Ashford - 8-car 465/9 (only booked Networker PDW - AFK)
2255 Victoria - Orpington via Herne Hill and Beckenham Junction - 4-car 319

I am unaware of Northern operating any services on behalf of TPE. They did a few years ago on some late night/early morning services but not to my knowledge since then. Unless of course, you are referring to the services of a few years ago.....

The 158s booked on Blackpool North-Manchester Victoria services are on the 22:20 departures from both ends.

It's diagrammed for a 455 though, the 171 would theoretically be needed only if it ever ran round to Ealing Broadway - and as we know that doesn't happen...

When I caught the Kensington Olympia-Wandsworth Road parliamentary service a 377 appeared.

Pity the service didn't actually appear on the departure screens on platform indicators. The platform indicator said "The next train is not in service"
