Not 100% always, but mostly so. Can cause consternation when trains are 'reverse formation' & folk are waiting at the 'wrong' end.
And yet nobody cares or thinks that having first class in one fixed place is a bad idea.

It was something British Rail brought in with HSTs and then also introduced into Mk2 hauled formations. The first class was intended to always be at the London end.

This was broken with Voyagers because they are always reversing and also with doubled up formations such as Voyagers and now 8xx.

It never really applied to suburban style units. The first class would be at one end, but never with any consistency as to whether the London end or the country end.

The Bluebell Railway have re-formed the 'A set' (our main set of mk1s) one time too many this week. All the coaches have been swapped around. Certainly confused the station staff! We were trying to gaze at the set in the siding and guess the order based on the window configurations.....

Then the B set comes out the shed..... and that's been swapped as well. Spent much of my afternoon getting people out of first class who didn't want to pay the supplement. Everyone was understanding though.
