Underground stock working off their normal route

During the early 1990s some late night Metropolitan Line services were timetabled to call at all Jubilee Line stations between West Hampstead and Neasden just before the end of service, with some early morning services doing the same in the opposite direction. Also at least one Circle Line train (C stock) which had stabled overnight at Neasden was rostered to start the day by running as a passenger service all Jublee Line stations form Neasden to West Hampstead then Finchley Road (Metropolitan Line platform) and Baker Street where it commenced its normal Circle Line service.
Does this still happen, and have there been any other cases of Underground stock being booked to work passenger services off their usual routes ?

That sounds rather interesting - doubt it still happens! And I think you've listed almost all possibilities as almost all other stock is non-interchangable due to different technologies used. I would love to see pictures of that happening though - I wish it still did but the first and last timetables would surely have those workings in... hmmmm :)

They never happen nowadays. Only the 96TS fo on that bit of the Jubilee too nowadays. A set of points has been removed from the Finchley Road area, but I can't remember where.

The most common one nowadays is the Picc running fast/semi fast/all stations via the local lines between Acton and Hammersmith, the District can also run via the fast lines, but this is rarer.

Wonder if, once the full replacement has been done, S7 (Circle/H&S/District) stock will occasionally wander up the Met (which will have S8). Pity it turned out to be too tricky to convert the whole subsurface system to take the S8 trains- though the on-train "line" maps of a completely unified Subsurface fleet would be a bit confusing- the existing C-Stock ones are bad enough, the S7 will be worse

Picadilly and Northern have an out-of-service connection, don't they? Any other lines physically connected together?

Metropolitan line trains occasionally stop at Willesden Green when there is planned work on the Jubilee.. that's probably the closest you'll get.

jopsuk, IIRC all lines are connected in some way excluding the W&C.

I think some early/late Piccadilly line trains used to run (to/from Barons Court) to West Kensington (District line).

Now right now...yes the very rare (and now engineering works only) Met lines stopping at Willesden Green (not even Neasden now) are about the only "out of the norm" stops I can think of now - and out of the norm routes are now unheard of.

I'm fairly sure that the W&C is not connected to any other part of the underground network (the current stock were I think lifted in and out at the Waterloo end somehow). Remember that it wasn't part of the underground at all until the 1990s!

There is a Picc/Northern connection at Kings Cross, a Met (and Picc)/Central connection (above ground) near West Ruislip, while the connections between the District and Piccadilly, and between all of the sub-surface lines are fairly obvious. When the East London Line was turned into the Overground, its former connection with the District (and H&C) was removed.

I'm fairly sure there are other connections linking the tube lines, but off the top of my head I can't recall where they are.

I remember some of the cars and signage being still in NSE colours - and that must have been the late 1990s!

Anyway, one question I've always been meaning to ask is the effect this had on season ticket holders... Presumably before the switch there was a cheaper ST than the standard Terminals+zone1 fare, so after it has there been a special offer or do all the Surrey stockbrokers have to pay the full LUL-inclusive rates?

I think at some point there was a booked (though maybe empty) Picc to High Street Kensington. I know of at least one that went there, before my time though.

The Bakerloo and Jubilee connect at Baker Street, Piccadilly to Victoria at Finsbury Park. The only connection left to the Central is at Ruislip, via the depot (can't recall if there is still a connection to the NR network as well).
And there is a connection at Barking to the NR, for use in engineering possesions only

There was a lift at Waterloo for the W&C. There's now an opening and a crane is hired in. There was a TV programme about it, Moving the Biggest, or something like that.

CULG said:
Trains in the District Line platforms at Ealing Broadway can run on to the eastbound Central Line; this connection is normally padlocked.

Trains can leave Ruislip Depot at the west end and run along a single unelectrified line around the back of the station to a National Rail siding, and then back on to the northbound line to High Wycombe. There is also a single-track connection from the west end to Ruislip siding on the Metropolitan and Piccadilly Lines.

Not too sure on how current this is though!

It is now District Line trains that do the shunt at West Kensington, the Piccadilly's were withdrawn some years ago. They were never booked to go to High Street Kensington, although some did make the trip!

The connections at Olympia and Ealing Broadway have now been removed.

During the recent Hammersmith blockade Ealing Common depot was allocated C Stock and these operated in passenger service to/from Ealing Broadway/Acton Town at the start/finish of the day.

What was it doing on the H&C anyway?

As an aside, Picc trains coming back from the Northern used to sometimes turn at High Street Ken and Gloucester Road or Mansion House, or go all the way round the Circle.

Bakerloo trains sometimes run to Kilburn High Road, when there is engineering work say. This is permitted in passenger use. WB Picc trains are also permitted to run through Barons Court siding to Hammersmith EB fast though I am not sujre if there is a crossover to enable District trains to do the same.

I would hazard a guess at either track recording or a radio survey - the livery gives away that it is a departmental unit, not a passenger unit, but I can't quite make out which of the various DMU conversions it might be and my departmental stock history book is up in the loft!

The photo was a couple of years before the dedicated LU Track Recording Train (with 1960 stock DMs and a 1973 stock trailer) was formed, but it could possibly have been to test radio reception for OPO on sub-surface lines which, I think, started in 1985?

I was reading in the Hornby Magazine that there where once A circle line service operated by a hand full of District line drivers.

The service Operated Wimbledon,A few laps of the Circle Line and back to Wimbledon, these where operated by CP, R and sometimes Q stock trains throughout the late 60's and early 70's.

Am I correct in thinking that this was a Sundays only working? I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

Yes, basically the Wimbleware extended on Sundays when frequencies on the Underground at the weekend were much worse than today.

This site is full of pics of LU Rarities. This one may be of interest in particular. I wonder how it got there. http://johnlawontherails.fotopic.net/p34101803.html
This is a Class 103 Park Royal DMU consisting of former DMBS 50396 and DTC 56162. These particular vehicles were withdrawn in 1970 and were transferred to Derby RTC and paired into Laboratory Coach set No. 5 and renumbered as RDB975089 & RDB97509 respectfully. The train set was named "Trim" as it was the prototype track inspection and monitoring unit. The unit was replaced by the Class 150 following which it was withdarwn.

The unit left Derby on the 12th Feb 1991, marshalled with a number of other units, for disposal at Mayer Parry at Snailwell where it was cut up within two weeks of arriving.

Because there was no physical connection between the CWL and the Met/Circle at Farringdon following the MSE Scheme re-opening, the unit would have travelled up the GC/Met line to Baker St where it would have reversed to go to Hammersmith. As I recall the connections between the CWL and the Met/Circle were removed many years previous to the closure in 1977

When photographed the unit would have been undertaking track recording. Another indication of this is the use of the "2Z24" reporting number ;)

There were extensions of District services beyond Edgware Road to Moorgate and Aldgate at weekends, although this stopped in the mid-'70s.

There were also 2 District crewed Circle Line services on Sundays, running on the both Inner & Outer rail, crew changing being at Gloucester Road.

Aha. That reminds me. I remember when a C Stock went up the Piccadilly Line all the way to Ruislip Sidings where it preceded to West Ruislip Depot. Anybody got any ideas as to why it was there.

I know of a training move done with a C stock off the district up towards Rayners, to be prepared in case of taking the wrong stick. Siggie 'conveniently' pulled off the wrong stick at Rayners to allow the train to be turned in Ruislip sidings ;) ... didn't make it all the way to Uxbridge though!

Can normal trains run on the subsurface lines?
Define 'normal'?
If you mean NR rolling stock, then yes- but there are restrictions to any rolling stock running on other lines.

Obviously Chiltern 165/168s operate along the MET, and the Richmond/Wimbledon/Wealdstone lines are shared.

There was a tour once where a Gatwick Express rake was taken over part of the District / Circle but it was hauled T&T with battery locos; it was called "The Battery Rover".

If I recall correctly, it couldn't do the full Circle because of overhang clearance issues at one or two specific locations.
