Doing an ALR in February and wondering what combination of travel cards etc to use.

We will need to use the tube as follows:

Sunday 1200-2300
Monday 2130-2300
Tuesday 1930-2300
Wednesday NOT LONDON
Thursday 1915-end
Friday ALL DAY
Saturday 1000-2100

We will only be in Z1-2 Sun-Tues, but will need Z1-6 for Thurs-Sat

Ideas most welcome.

I see a 7 day student card, but not sure how you qualify for one

Oyster! Loaded with PAYG credit. Caps at whatever travelcard would have been valid for your combination of journies.

IIRC the three-day is just priced at 3 x one-day price, so the only advantage is not having to queue three times. I would think Oyster PAYG is the best bet for this sort of travel.

on arrival at Euston, it's usually much quicker to buy a paper travelcard from the machines in the mainline station than to queue up at the underground office to get your railcard added to your Oyster.

Then add the railcard discount next time you are at a quiet underground station.

I think that I got stung for a £4 fare last time I used my Oyster on the underground - it flashed up on the barriers as I left, but I had a train to catch and didn't have time to query it.
That doesn't happen with paper travelcards!

London 3 day Travelcards are being withdrawn from 31/12/09 as part of Oysterisation from 01/01/10.

Actually, thinking again about what you might be planning, Oyster PAYG may not be suitable. If you're planning on riding around for a while without leaving stations through the barriers, then get paper Travelcards instead.

The reason for this is because when you enter the system using Oyster PAYG you only have a defined amount of time for your journey before you have to touch out - 70 minutes entering and exiting in Z1 on a weekday, 99 minutes Z1 to Z3 on a Saturday and so on. If you exceed the time limit then you'll be charged for both an unfinished and an unstarted journey, each at £4 (and those journeys won't count towards your daily cap).

So, if you did (for example) Liverpool Street to West Ruislip and come back to say Kings Cross without leaving the system at West Ruislip you would exceed the Z1 journey max and be hit for £8.

We're tourists, we're not line bashing, so that won't be an issue
