Yeah looks like it. No mention of mainline training after so long either.

I think if a shunter referred themselves as a 'maneuverer' they'd probably be taken down a notch or two.

I notice they come under engineering dept rather than ops. So this would be similar to what Bev does.

It is essentially a maintenance depot driver, no fuelling, no cleaning, just driving trains around Reading Train Care Depot and prepping them for service once they have been fuelled & serviced. Money is good, most of the shifts are night work as that's when the depot is at its busiest.

What do you classify as 'good', out of interest? ie, do you know the salary? I'm interested, but would need to know if it was a significant increase for me as I'd need to relocate for it, however with a wife and kids here I would need to keep this place on as well...

Thanks for any info.

Ha, there is at the moment hence probably why they are advertising the role! Seriously though there always seems to be extra hours available especially if things aren't going according to plan and we need to get the units ready for the morning departures.

It's not a just depot drivers vacancy. It's a foot in the door for anyone who wants to become mainline driver.

Just about all jobs on the railway are a foot in the door for the mainline. By all means being a shunter means there are a lot of transferable skills but it doesn't necessarily guarantee a job as a mainline driver.

I think the crucial point about this position is you come under fleet dept, not ops. Don't know where that makes you stand regarding mainline.

As far as I'm aware there is no automatic progression to Mainline driver, you would have to apply just like everybody else. Of course having the full rules knowledge of a driver and the traction knowledge 'should' be a big plus on your application (incident free should be a big help too!).
IIRC two or three manoeuvrers have recently applied and been accepted for trainee driver. I don't know if they have to do the whole course or just certain parts.

Indeed you stand in very good stead but its the none automatic progression that is the crux really. Still a great way to get into the railways in a safety critical role.

In the real World, Depot Driver is a damn good job in its own right, and has many advantages that some mainline drivers can only dream of.

For example - a full week of shifts without ever having to stop at a single station ?

Year after year of driving yet never having to even deal with a member of the public ?

Everyone treated equally - so no getting shafted with horrendous bottom link work when you first start ?

Go for it and if you still want to be a mainline driver then nothing stopping you from moving on again, if there's no vacancies and you end up stuck in the MDD/Shunter grade then that is certainly nothing to worry about.

You a depot driver, Bev? Funny you've never mentioned it...

Sarcasm ?

I can't see how this will stand in your way.
Being in a different department or not, you'll still count as an Internal applicant, which is all that matters.
You'll probably be competing against Conductors, mainly. You just got to score higher than them in the Interview.

As a depot driver, do you get full rules training?

I don't dream of not having stations to stop at. Bread and butter part of the job. It's good to engage the old grey matter.

I also like having some interaction with the public. Nothing worse than seeing the same few faces all day long and having no variety or social interaction. If someone was a social recluse or not very congenial then MDD'ing would suit I suppose.

Not usually, as some of it is irrelevant to Depots.

Traction is another thing altogether it's the standard Drivers traction training at the academy then LOADS more when you go and do the practical at the TMD.

The public are disrespectful.
I'll stick to speaking to other MDD's, Depot Fitters and Cleaners, than the above.

Unlikely as MDD'ing is all about working as part of a team at almost all times.
Mainline would suit that type of person more as it is working on your own most of the time.
