'Shocking' CCTV of rail leap man at Crosskeys station

A man who jumped off a platform and ran in front of a departing train at a station in a futile bid to get on it has been criticised by police.

"Shocking" footage of the man's dash across the tracks at Crosskeys station in Caerphilly county has been released in a bid to track him down.

The incident at 20:00 BST on 15 May was "utter stupidity", said British Transport Police (BTP).

Insp Mike Jones said he was "appalled" by the man's actions.

“I cannot emphasise enough the dangers associated with this type of stupid behaviour”

The footage shows the young man, dressed in a red top and dark trousers, jumping from the opposing platform, running across the tracks and around the front of the train onto the other platform.

He then tries to open the doors to the 19:40 Ebbw Vale to Cardiff Central service, as it was preparing to leave the station.

He is unable to get on and the train moves away.

"This shocking footage clearly shows the man pass around the front of the train, in the direction it is about to move, to try and get on board," said Insp Jones, officer in charge at BTP Cardiff.

"I am absolutely dismayed to see people are willing to risk their lives for the sake of a few seconds rather than waiting for the next train. It is utter stupidity.

That has to be the worst attempt to board a train that I have ever seen.

Looking at the video clip the trains seems to be already moving. That's the luckiest bloke alive tonight, he was so nearly another "one under" .

Certainly the case with BTP when in Wales. The following picture is a zoom of the back of a Wales and West division officer arriving at Birmingham New Street having travelled from South Wales. I wonder whether he, and other BTP Wales & West officers, have two uniforms?

You are assuming his friends are smart enough to realise that what he did was stupid. This sort of thing can be seen as 'brave' and 'manly' by some people in the world.

Thank you very much for verifying my musings. One thing I have wondered about Welsh police uniforms is why "Heddlu" takes priority over "Police"and if anyone has ever mistaken them for either not being police officers or assumed "Heddlu" was some division within the police.
That is a lovely picture of New Street, by the way.

We live in a wider world in which similar transgressions are commonplace - motorists driving way over the speed limit, going through lights at red, using mobile phones whilst driving etc - but somehow, when we see rules being broken on the railway, it's far more shocking.

Of the professional rail people on here, how many have never broken speed limits or slipped through a red light in their car on their way to work but at the same time, naturally, view such things as totally unacceptable on the railway?

The world is full of idiots like this. But just because it happens on God's Own Railway shouldn't make such rule breaking any less acceptable than anywhere else. Should it?

At least it's not as bad as Ireland; where many public bodies don't even have an official English name - and the Irish Gaelic name is used even in English media.

I used to live in Wales. A lot of people down there won't see the stupidity of what he did. Had the train hit him and he'd lived, they'd have all been telling him "get a claim in, butty, you could get a pay out and stay on the sick permanently".

Oh, the number of people who've told me they've been to Traeth Beach!

First time my mam came down to see me when I lived there, I told her to come off the M4 at the second Newport turn, and turn right towards Pontypool instead of Newport. She phones me to tell me that they're not sure if they're going the right way, coz the last signs they saw when they left the M4 were pointing towards "Casnewydd" to the left, and "Pont-y-pwl" to the right. I never saw a sign for Newport, she said.........

The fact that Welsh road signs have the Welsh translation first is to do with the fact that Welsh was (still is, really) a dying language, and the WAG want people to speak the lingo again. However, some places don't actually have a welsh translation. For example, we lived in Cwmbran. In Cwmbran there are several areas of housing such as Greenmeadow, Thornhill, Northville. None of these places have a welsh translation, which can be quite confusing for a first time visitor.

Getting off the subject somewhat, but I hope that clears it up.

Actually which language comes first on road signs varies throughout the country, and is completely up to the local council. As a rule of thumb, the councils corresponding to Gwent, Glamorgan and Clwyd put English first, and the councils corresponding to Gwynedd and Dyfed put Welsh first. Powys varies throughout the county.

(In fact quite a lot of road signs in Monmouthshire are English-only, predating the devolved government making bilingual signs mandatory.)
