Today 17.05 East Croydon-Blackfriars service ran fast non stopping at London Bridge due to staff shortage. Meaning the majority of passengers on the train were dumped at East Croydon to await the 17.35. As one passenger put it they mustn't need a driver for it to run fast to Blackfriars the service was about 10 late at East Croydon. Bearing in mind there were no Southern servicesinto London Bridge today it left passengers to await a following service. Another poor showing from FCC

Perhaps the driver would have been over his hours and missing out the stop was a way to avoid this.

Looks like it was diverted via Tulse Hill, as there are no reports after Norwood Junction until Blackfriars

Your assuming that the driver brings the same train back. And with the reduced capacity in the Gatwick area may have meant if this service wasn't put back on time then it would have be cancelled all the way to Brighton and back, you one set of passengers suffered. But it could have easily spread much further and its Network Rail that caused the issue with the signaling problems.

The trains's return working, and indeed it's next working from Brighton were both cancelled, due to train crew shortages.

some fgw commuters complain their train is up to 4 minutes late!
They are the patient ones, I've had people complain when the the train has departed right time!

Sounds like another case of FCC not paying a good wage for working Sunday.
I wouldn't of thought the route via Herne Hill is any quicker and I assume the passenger with luggage from Gatwcik were delighted they had to change trains if you had seen them struggling of the train do not care whether East Croydon is a backwater or not.
I may be in a minority on this forum that if I buy a train ticket I expect journey to run as planned while understanding some things are outside a TOC's control a staff shortage isn't one of them.

Yeah but they are still on the platform!
When I were a guard, I once had a bloke effing and beeing at me because the 1903 Waterloo to Guildford was still at Waterloo at 1904 and he wanted to know the reason, he didnt look too happy, when at 1905, the signal cleared and I closed the doors and set off with him still on the platform
, he was told 3 times to get on the train but he kept on ranting at me so sod him and off we go! 
Via Herne Hill is usually ~10minutes slower* (lines speeds and plenty of extra junctions).
Hence if they went via Herne Hill it suggests more limited capacity in the London Bridge area due to the planned engineering works than was originally expected?
*Hence part of the need for some of the additional 377s for Thameslink to run all services via Herne Hill for 4 years due to the London Bridge rebuild.

I get the feeling some people would gladly see trains leave early as long as they've got on. Why bother with some of the timetabled wait times that can be a few minutes, to allow some chance of catching up, to aid connections or to ensure fitting in a path in a tightly congested area.
No, just leave whenever and to hell with anyone else!
Many trains will wait at Finsbury Park for a little while, but leaving early doesn't mean the train would get into King's Cross any quicker. But I've seen people tutting and sighing, as they feel they're being delayed and it will mess up their day - even though if they checked the timetable, they'd see that they haven't been delayed at all.

Surprised the headline "Travelling by train causes cancer" etc hasn't been used yet, a la their other carbon copy ones. Still time though.

Train ran via Herne Hill, and terminated in the Bay Platforms at Blackfriars, as it wasn't coming back for some time. Should have been cancelled from Brighton, due to no driver, but FCC managed to run it up to Blackfriars. However, you cannot access the Bay platforms from the London Bridge direction.

Staff shortage could have been a reasonable description of a circumstance where a train was diverted because the only available crew didn't sign the booked route?
That article would no doubt come complete with some photos of old VEPs attached to it..
