Unable to alight at Erith!

Hi All,
Thought you might be interested in todays special SET incident of the day!

Travelling back from Abbey Wood to Erith with my daughter in her buggy and the train didn't stop far enough down the platform so when I opened the doors I was treated to a locked blue gate on one side and a drop onto the ground the other - with no way of leaving the train (as there is no room to push a buggy up the aisle to next set of doors)

I had to carry on to Slade Green and alight there!

The remarkably helpful staff at Slade Green couldn't believe the picture when I showed him and gave me the headcode and other train information so that I could file a complaint!

South Eastern metro is virtually all DOO, yes.

That's a rather worrying pic.

Oh dear :( Oddly enough a discussion was had on this forum only very recently about the requirements of a Guard operating power doors to first check that his train is correctly platformed. Some were of the view that this was a rather pointless act and simply delays trains; here is the reason that it is done. Had you not been paying as much attention as you were, or had you been partially sighted, drunk or so on you could have fallen and ended up injured on the lineside, or worse.

If indeed this was a DOO train, as I understand it would have been, I would advise those who feel that Guards have no real role to play in today's railway to observe and consider what could have happened here. Perhaps when you write into SouthEastern you might wish to ask them to justify to you the lack of a Guard to ensure your safety on this particular service.

There have been plenty of stop short doors release with a guard releasing said doors - its going to happen occasionally whatever the policies as its simply human error...

The driver must have thought it was a 5/6 car train. I think that all DOO services should stop right at the front of the platform. Then again I saw this at Todmorden once. A 3 car train pulled up to the 2 car stop and as the guard was in the middle carridge and it was dark so he did not notice.

That's really bad! Imagine if that was an express service! Were you given some form of compensation or something?

For a driver's display in the cab, all you need is some polystyrine / plywood, paper, stickey back plastic and some velcro tabs...

That won't be popular. On stations where the entrance is at one end you would have people walking the whole length of the platform when it's a short train.

I think you'll find that is generally on Southern rather than Southeastern. And they are totally pointless announcements unless (a) the train is due to call at a station with a short platform, or (b) it splits en-route.

They seem to have been significantly toned down recently. Just as they start making use of SDO on East Grinstead trains... :roll:

Just like you have in a truck, You dial in the hight of your trailer, but even this is not foolproof as I know of more than one driver that picket up the same trailer for the same job for a number of years and took the same route but one day he had a higher trailer and forgot about a bridge until it was to late. I think there should be a system in place like you have on the underground where the doors will not open unless the train is in the right place.

Do they have that on the platforms at surface stations?

Also, for variable length trains, this would still require something to be set up when forming the train, and set again if the train gets split at some point during the service/ the day.

Works fine on 377s, except at Victoria where there is a slight delay

That often happens with class 456 (2 car) operated services on the South London line, Especcially at Sydenham.

Aye, we had that issue with some of our vehicles, different hights for different loads, configurations, atlas cranes etc.

A number of c2c drivers use a transparrent sign with a white "8" or "12" which they place on the windscreen when driving that length of train- obviously out of immediate sight-lines.
