The flagship station isn't just about the railway. There has to be a broader cultural/architectural significance to it as well. York would be in with a good shout IMO.

Personally if you are considering "Yorkesque" stations Id say Brighton is a better example but for me St Pancras then Glasgow Central.

They're all good candidates. Brighton is indeed the Belle of the Southern Region.

Waterloo is possibly the most famous to outsiders especially when it had the Eurostar terminal. Closely followed by Paddington because or the bear.

Bournemouth Central is indeed glorious, now that the roof has been installed. But Brighton is still the Belle. I can still remember my awe, arriving for the first time as a child in the 80's (on a CIG, naturally the iconic Brighton train).

Yes, I see many a tourist film their walk from the end of the platform. You are able to tell they are a tourist from the large suitcase and the obvious fact a normal user or someone who hasn't been won't really film it, they may look up and think its great but then will remember their priority of getting to the gateline.

It is the sad destiny of a grand station to be "on the way" somewhere.

But there are always some who stop and consider. That's why I love the statue of Sir John Betjeman at StP so much. He was the epitomy of the passenger appreciating his surroundings.

St Pancras will never cease to amaze me ever. As I child before its refurbishment when I was 6 or 7 I remember going to Leicester, even as dirty and derelict it was it still was amazing. Glad it was refubished and done up.

Edinburgh Waverley (or Just Edinburgh now as some sites call it now) is also nice.

Bridlington and Filey railway stations 2 Nice examples of old N.E.R. style stations Filey with its original trainshed like pickering station and Bridlington with its original N.E.R. building facade and N.E.R. canopies despite the signal box levers been out of use and semaphores no longer intact.

Have to agree about Filey, it's got such an old world feel to it.

Every time I'm in Filey I have to visit the station.

Huddersfield is OK from the outside but nothing flash once you are through the barriers.

. . . . in sharp contrast to the new central London Elizabeth Line stations which are nothing special from the outside but mightily impressive once you're inside.

I was at Hull Paragon last summer and I thought that was a splendid station.

The new Crossrail stations are certainly impressive from an engineering standpoint... but for stations that take your breath away and leave you thinking "how on earth did they build this whilst a major world city carried on mostly as normal above their heads?" (which admittedly is a niche category) it has to be London Underground's Westminster.

Paddington EL is not dissimilar in construction - and has a wonderful station upstairs too!
