As is most of Scotland... it breaks my heart to give obscure locations and not be able to give everywhere in the more densely populated areas, but maps always end up lying in some way...

I haven't finished adding places, and eventually intend to fill as much of the blank space between lines as possible, so keep watching. I have also gone for proper place names over station names (so Bradford rather than a specific station for example).

I'm now looking for thoughts on how to host the finished file(s)?

Thanks for the quick reply. I had assumed you'd finished Wales, however that's good news then. I can't really help on the hosting of the files, I've no idea there, but I hope you find a suitable host without any hassle.

Hmmmm, lets check the resolution of this...

OK, looks fine...maybe my concerns about hosting are unfounded...

Very impressive! :D May I suggest Cheltenham Spa, Droitwich Spa and Ludlow for your map, there may just be enough room ;)

Before I go ahead and add/remove places/names from the map, can someone test this as a template for me? Thanks.

OK, here's a complete draft. There are some places missing (notably Lancaster :o), so as well as any errors (spelling mistakes, labels in the wrong place, missing labels etc.) I'm looking to add to this wishlist:

*LONDON AREA
*LEEDS AREA
*CARDIFF AREA
*MANCHESTER AREA
*LIVERPOOL AREA
*GLASGOW AREA
Lancaster
Aberdare and other Valley heads (eg. Maesteg)
Newton, Welshpool, Builth Wells, obscure Welsh places...
Andover, Axminster
Cheltenham Spa, Ludlow...

This is excellent work Oxted!

However I have noticed that the line between Leamington Spa and Coventry appears to be missing?

Ah yes... and from Aylesbury to Bicester. Anyone spots anymore of these, let me know. Those are going to be a pain to slip in...

I'll get onto it at some point. I have no intention of including preserved lines (other than maybe an elite few at a much later date) at the current time. I'm potentially going to have another go at the map anyway, using the new technique pioneered this afternoon to produce this beauty:

What technique's that? :|

Had a wee look, and I can't see anything wrong with the areas I know well (Scotland). I know Helensburgh is slightly depressing, but I wouldn't call it Hellensburgh though ;)

Well... the best way to describe the previous technique would have to be pointillism. Excel drew loads of dots. For this new one, excel doesn't draw the dots but instead joins them up in its tiny brain. Takes longer, though...

Oops... mind you, if that's the only mistake on the entire map I've done well! ;). I'll try a special one of Scotland to make it up to you, to see whether I can work this new method on a larger scale.

I'm rather enjoying having a thread entirely about me, in a smug, arrogant way... :D

OK, two maps, one old, one new. No prizes for guessing which is which, although I've made it as ambiguous as possible.

Which is better? Which has the most spelling errors? :D

Very nice work! :D Are you going to be including freight lines that occasionally get pressed into passenger service (going by the thumbnail you don't have Lichfield-Burton for instance)?

OK, here's a map of the Glasgow area. Which lines are missing?

Many thanks.

I swear there's something missing on the eastern side but I can't quite put my finger on it ;) Nevertheless an excellent piece of work!

I don't know if you want just the passengers lines, or if it's everything you want. The following (tiny) things are missing:
  • Scotstounhill-Anniesland (not in passenger service)
  • Springburn-Cowlairs (used by the sleeper)
  • Ashfield-Bishopbriggs (also used by the sleeper)
  • The aforementioned chord at Gartcosh
  • Whifflet-Sunnyside (not in passenger service, but was used by trains during engineering works in the 1990s)
  • Kirkwood-Coatbridge Central (not in passenger service)
  • I can't see the junction at Mossend too clearly (where the Motherwell-Cumbernauld line passes under the Bellshill-Holytown line), but there are lines from Motherwell-Bellshill, Motherwell-Holytown and Whifflet-Holytown all in passenger service (the latter only in the four Sundays before Christmas)
  • Again, I can't make it out too well without labels, but did you include the line from Shieldmuir to Wishaw?
  • The City Union Line (not in passenger service)
  • There are lines from the WCML before Glasgow Central which go to Shields Junction and onto the Kilmarnock line, as well as a link from the Kilmarnock line-Shields, but again these aren't used by passenger trains
.

However, most of these aren't in regular passenger service.
