It has always baffled me why no ferry company has ever thought to start a ferry service between the UK and USA ever before. I have always thought this would be such a popular route. There has always been so much tourism of British tourists visiting the USA and American tourists visiting the UK so we get many tourists travelling between these two countries.
The USA has terrible public transport (in fact the public transport is non existent in most parts) and also very high car rental costs. So bringing your own car to and from the USA is the perfect thing to do. That is why i think a ferry would be amazing. I am sure many foot passengers would be interested too.
I have been to the USA for holidays multiple times and whenever i go i always take the goods ferry there and back. This way i can also take my car with me. However the goods ferry is not ideal. You can not simply drive on and off the ferry so the loading and unloading of my car is extremely slow. The goods ferry also travels very slowly and there always seems to be delays in the port. It is also not really designed for passengers so the facilities and rooms onboard are not very good. Also it is always so difficult and complicating to arrange it and pay for it and find the right people to speak with to arrange a ticket for the goods ferry so it is always such a hassle.
The only other option is taking the cruise ship. I have never been on a cruise ship but it does not really appeal to me. It is extortionately expensive. It seems to be a very posh upper class thing not really meant for ordinary travellers. So the cruise ship is not really an ideal option for travellers who simply want to get between the UK and USA and vice versa.
It is very easy to get anywhere in Europe or Asia or Africa by ferry and car. But to get anywhere in America is very difficult.
What we need is a simple car and passenger ferry. Just a simple ferry with simple rooms onboard. Nothing fancy but just a basic room with a bed and shower and toilet. Just some basic facilities onboard like a cafe and restaurant and shop. That is what is really needed.
I am thinking they could run a weekly service using two ferries. Maybe it could depart each end on Monday morning and arrive at the other side on Friday evening. I think that is how long it takes (about four or five days) but maybe it could be shortened slightly. It could run from somewhere on the South Coast (maybe Dover or Portsmouth or Southampton or Plymouth or Penzance probably) to New York City in the USA for easy access to roads and public transport.
I would be very interested to hear others opinions and views on this and whether this could ever started. If you have any ideas on whether this could ever be possible that would be interesting to hear. I would also be very interested if there would be any major obstacles to this. So far no ferry service has been set up so there must be a reason.
