That's like something straight out of CCHQ.
Only the 1945, 1966, 1974 and 1997-2010.

The rest of the elections have returned conservatives, including 25 years of back to back Conservative governments

And 1929, 1950, 1964 and, if it counts, National Labour in 1931; and there were two in 1974. You can add 2024, but remove 2010.

And when did we have twenty-five years of consecutive Conservative government?

You didn't mention that only the elections you chose to count should be counted.

Looking at the London results, it's not too dissimilar to the recent Mayoral election, Inner London voted Labour and Outer London is either Lib Dem or Tory. Corbyn in Islington North is an island on its own and I fully expect that will flip back to Labour when he steps down eventually.

Nobody seems to have noticed that Labour took Uxbridge at the second time of asking!

Bromley was very close to going Labour (only 300 majority) and Chingford would have been Labour without the row over the candidate. Romford has become marginal.

Saying that, I actually think your general point about the support in Bristol / Brighton and the two more rural seats is a different kinf of support and bejng unsure how the greens navigate it all is pretty bang on though, and it will be interesting to see what happens.

I think someone should have updated the Green Party WWW site by now

After the last election in May 2024, the Green Party has the following Greens in power in England and Wales:
  • Two members of the House of Lords (Natalie Bennett and Jenny Jones)
  • Three London Assembly Members (Zoë Garbett, Zack Polanski, and Caroline Russell)
  • Greens hold over 800 seats in over 170 different councils

I'm not sure if three GLA seats is that impressive given they've always had a presence. They went from third to fourth in the Mayoral election which is not good.

Bromley is a shame, as its spoiled what is possibly my favourite stat of the election:

It's a shame the Tories didn't lose Romford. Its incumbent was near the top of the list of MPs I wanted to disappear.

I am glad Gullis, Kawczynski and Daly have gone though.

Anyone know why Reform didn't stand a candidate at Stone, Bill Cash's former seat? It probably enabled parachuted-in Tory candidate 'Sir' Gavin Williamson to retain it. UKIP managed a few thousand votes here, enough to recoup their deposit. Was it in recognition by Reform of all the arch Eurosceptic work and speeches by Cash over the years, enough to give the Tories a hospital pass? Williamson is such a self-delusional man he will probably now put himself forward to be the first person rejected in the coming Tory leadership contest.

Mine too. Doesn't reflect too highly on the people of Romford, re-electing this thug knowing what he's like.

I suspect they only went from third to fourth because of the move from AV to first-past-the-post. Green supporters were likely to lend their votes to Labour to ensure the Conservatives lost, where in the past they would have been free to express a first preference for Green and just have Labour as second preference

Is anyone involved in the election betting fiasco still in parliament?

I had a quick look at the law (I'm not a lawyer so take the following with a pinch of salt.):

As far as criminality goes there is an offence of "cheating", but that is not defined in the Act so would need some case law to apply here.
There is no concept like insider trading applied to betting (despite discussions along these lines on television discussoins at the time).
The Gambling commission could void the bets if it could prove priior knowledge of the election date but that would just be a slap on the wrist for unfair betting.
There could be some investigation relating to not meeting standards befitting someone in public office.
There is an offence of Attempting to procure a pecuniary advantage by deception ( Fraud Act 2006). Perhaps the betting fiasco could fall within that.

If it wasnt for covid I think the tories would still be in government now, probably with a much reduced majority. Boris Johnson would still be PM.

There's quite a lot of supposition there. Personally I think Boris might still be there, but they'd have lost by even more because they wouldn't have the Covid excuse to hide behind for the failures of Brexit

Johnson would have been found lacking one way or another as he simply isn't able to deal in details and ends up misleading someone or other at some point.

Just reading Serena Brown's twitter, can't believe people are falling for her, she's advocating for all people who aren't white to be deported, even if they were born here, and denying the holocaust and praising Hitler, hope people don't like her ever get ever to be involved in politics, its extremism, can't believe people actually follow hateful woman like her.

Can't find anything about her on the web probably her due to being rightfully cancelled, but she's got a large following on X, with almost 30k followers
I've got mates with that many X followers. You used to be able to buy them for less than 0.1p each. Notability starts at least 10x that

She said half of the English team need to go back to Africa. I Reported her. But looking at Farage's poster on X about he judges by people by their character and not their skin colour, have brought quite a few nationalists and racists in the comments!

Can you say a bit more about the geography here please? Cross border constituencies were a feature of the last boundary review, I have already commented about Waveney Valley which is part Suffolk and part Norfolk. Are there others?

Tiverton & Minehead is a new constituency - geographically it's not too bad because Minehead is almost directly north, but the Devon-Somerset border is right across the middle. It's a bit of a wierd border - geographically based on ranges of hills and supposedly vaguely the border of the celtic kingdom of Devon & Cornwall, although nobody really knows where that actually went - a bit late to change it now I guess!

What does this have to do with the election? She's a common or garden racist on Twitter.

Would doing that still fulfil the manifesto on which the SNP were elected and fulfil the wants of those who voted for the SNP to be the government?

Unless the SNP manifesto for the last Scottish Government mentioned mothing other than their desire for independence, expecting them to govern effectively is surely not too much to ask?

If they did what you ask (and asked for at every opportunity by D Ross) that would be electoral suicide. .

(General) electoral suicide is pretty much what the SNP achieved on Thursday! The many voters wanting rid of the Tories could have voted SNP rather than Labour, but, in huge numbers, did not. The SNP must reflect and realise why that might have been.

Anyone know what the total number of registered voters was across the whole of the UK at the 2024 General Election last week, and also the average percentage turnout, compared with both the 2017 + 2019 elections?

Believe in 2019 there were some 47.5mln registered voters and the average turnout was 67.3%. In 2017 it was 46.8mln registered voters and a turnout of 68.8%.

Politics West (BBC regional show) had Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown (MP for North Cotswolds), and he said on Tuesday and Wednesday he will be chairing the 1922 committee to work on timetable regarding replacing Rishi Sunak as party leader.

For those not aware, Sir Graham Brady who previously was chair of 1922 is no longer an MP.

BBC news is saying turnout is 60%, the lowest since 2001 (59%)
Labour is noted as receiving 9,704,655 votes, 33.7% of the total votes.

Votes successfully cast - 28,797,195.8 (yes it's a decimal, 33.7 is obviously rounded)
Estimated voter base - 48 million people.

If Reform UK, get in 2029, and they reform the system to FPTP, we might end up having these sort of people in parliament, I wouldn't put it past this country to do so.

I did a search for Serena Brown, i found out there is a photographer called that as well who seems far more interesting than some obscure racist.
