Concerning New Street, you must give it some sort of pardon, given that it was built in the 60s when designers had just discovered set squares and so had to make use of right-angles at every possible opportunity. There are many worse examples of 60s architecture, such as New Street's signal box. Snow Hill is truly awful though.

They are for increased adhesion as you approach the buffers. Also to let the driver know it's time to apply the brakes. And yes, they are very noisy.....

Increase adhesion?

I was always told it was so that a train registers on the Track Circuiting as the ends of the rails are normally covered in enough crap as to prevent a circuit being made.

No one seems to have mentioned Crewe yet. I think Crewe is horrible station. Dark and boring and slightly confusing on a first visit.

Also, shame on the person that complained about Derby :p

I entered Euston on foot for the first time yesterday. You have to walk through a really dodgy looking outdoor shopping arcade in what was presumably once Euston Square. You also have to look at the outside, which is far more hideous than the concourse.

Milton Keynes Central (do they have any other stations?) isn't exactly much to look at either.

Both have a brilliant practical design though.

The station buildings at Harlow Town aren't very nice, looks like some awful 1970s reject, and strangely a Grade II listed building!

Snow Hill is all under a building too though ain't it? Not exactly pretty :?

Ugly station has to be Hillingdon Metropolitan Line. Well I guess you either love it or hate it and I actually quite like it, but I know not many do!

I can't believe no one has mentioned Luton station. It's just a pure and utter dump. Doesn't help a refurb has been postponed several times either....
