Hi,

I am an adult looking to travel from Uckfield to/from Swansea

Either out 4th July, returning 6th July (looking to leave Uckfield at around 9:30)
Or out 17th July, returning 19th July (looking to leave Swansea at around 13:00)

I am looking to leave Uckfield at around 9:30 on both dates and departing Swansea at 13:00, but happy to change this if it is cheaper to travel at other times

Cheapest I can find for first set of dates is £90.90 and for second set of dates £81.00.

Is is possible to get any cheaper fares for these journeys?

(I have a family and friends railcard if it helps, but it is unfortunately not valid on my journey as it requires at least one child to travel!)

Many thanks.

The new version of Trainsplit (version 2; out soon) suggests the following as the cheapest combination of flexible "walk-up" fares:

  • Uckfield to Swindon Super Off Peak Return (SSR) via Guildford/Reading
  • Swindon to Newport Anytime Return (SOR)
  • Newport to Swansea Off Peak Return (SVR)
However the saving isn't much compared to the cost of a through Uckfield to Swansea Super Off Peak Return (SSR).

I wouldn't bother with the "split"; the through fare is more flexible as you can travel via London and is valid on any train between Uckfield <> London (Network Area Rule) and is only restricted between Paddington <> Swansea.

You can get Advance fares for about £40 each way, the total will be about £10 less than a flexible return. It's not worth a £10 saving for such a huge loss of flexibility, in my opinion.

The Route Guildford/Reading ticket sounds like another trainsplit interesting route, how do you get that way? If its walking between Edenbridge Town and Edenbridge its about a mile or 20 mins walk along a main road whilst its probably valid its probably not something the average normal would want I would guess.

It's permitted, and faster, to do:

Uckfield - East Croydon
East Croydon - Redhill
Redhill - Reading
Reading - Swindon

It's also valid for the walk through Edenbridge, using the 'fixed link' interchange between Edenbridge Stations, as this route is shorter (118.88 miles) than the shortest route by rail (123.15 miles)
