tyre turning question

ok so the process is the tyre is heated up and fitted to the wheel and then contracts when cold holding tightly onto the wheel. but somewhere else on the forum discuss the wheel shape to be "coned" to avoid the flange touching the rail, so what prevents the tyre from tending to slip off outward, away from the flange, seeing as it is not contracting on a purely flat surface?

To put it simply - the flange on the other side of the bogie. (i.e. the opposite wheel)

Hi, it is not the internal surface, only the outer running surface that is tapered which tends to naturally center the wheel off the flange preventing wear and noise on straight track
The internal suraces of the tyre and external surface of the wheel is parallel with slight oversize of the wheel to tyre diameters thus when the tyre is heated, the tyre then fits over the wheel contracting to a tight fit as it cools down. hope that make sense

Tyre turning is the process of turning the wheel on a lathe to smooth out wheel flats by shaving the wheel tread.

Ah I see what you were asking now. I thought you were talking about the profile of the tyre, not the wheel.


As RoyalOak said, the surface between the wheel and the tyre is flat.
