I've heard on the grapevine that Tyne Yard has now closed for anything in connection with freight, and remains now purely to deal with passenger stock stabling, eg Crosscountry and Grand Central sets.

Is this true?

I know very little ever used the yard lately, mainly a couple of engineers trains.

Correct - it has closed as an LDC, with remaining work moving to Carlisle, Millerhill and Doncaster.

There may still be trains from Tyne in the coming weeks to clear out old stocks, particularly concrete sleepers.

Thanks Mark, seems a waste of a facility but I suppose times change.

For interest, why? It seems not that long ago that there was investment in it for engineering trains.

One of the purposes of the 2 engineers trains each way at Tyne Yard (6N71/6D67, 6M47/6E48) was to interchange materials from Doncaster CE yards to Carlisle CE yard and vice-versa, in a timely manner.

Will such traffic now be routed the longer way round via Doncaster to Millerhill (6S31/6E36), then Millerhill to Carlisle (6M51/6S50)? Or is an alternative route available feeding into the Crewe - Carlisle engineering trains (6C02/6K05)?

I suppose rationalisation is the name of the game and current traffic levels will not warrant a direct path, but occasional STP services might be needed.
