Tyne/Wear Metro contract

DB and Metro's in house bid have been announced as the final two bidders for the contract to operate stations and trains on the Tyne/Wear Metro as part of the modernisation programme.

I note that maintenance will be the responsibility of the contractor, and wonder how much DB's recent Berlin S-Bahn troubles will affect consideration of their bid by Nexus...

Would have preferred it to be the in house team to keep on running the train, have heard DB Regio are not exactly great. At least they cannot put the fares up though. Hopefully we won't be seeing their branding either.

Who from? This is the same DB Regio team currently responsible for Chiltern, LOROL and WSMR, and from most measures they all seem to be doing pretty well...

Well they haven't been doing their best in Berlin, why did one train derail recently and the rest have to have their wheels examined?

I don't recall any Berlin s-bahns actually derailing (although an ICE did derail in Cologne) but Berlin's s-bahn has had major disruption since July due to problems with axles and brakes. Also, all 67 ICE-Ts have been out of service to replace their axles. I think this was a manufacturing fault.

Back to Bob Crowe wanting a publicly owned metro, it will be publicly owned, by the German public

The Metro is still going to be publicly owned, just we'll have near enough the same situation as on the mainline with a franchisee running the actual railway.

They are going to in the next decade, but the original Metrocars will be refurbished before then.

Under the Project Orpheus plans they would be tram-trains, which may be able to run on the streets in the west end.
