Isn't all the wiring (including looms and electrical fittings) being replaced too? Or have I just imagined having read that?

Yes it is (not sure if I mentioned that or not). However a lot of the wiring that was installed has been for the information screens, which was carried out before they left for Doncaster, so most of that will not need to be changed. There was also a programme for door modifications going on at the depot so again they shouldn't have needed much doing to them either.

As you can imagine a lot of the electrics on the Metrocars is obsolete (along with the equipment used to test them!)

Next new ticket machines are going in at Tyne Dock.

There is also some discussion with various cycling groups at seeing how bicycles on the Metro can be re-introduced (or at least better facilities at Metro stations).

Second one coming back from Doncaster is late apparently. Should have been back a few weeks ago (no surprise there).

Also, looks as if the Metro is on strike next week, so might be no services at all or we may see some interesting movements.

Time it is taking probably wont see new trains out on public service till 2012 now. Can 4041 not be connected to any other metro instead of of waiting for the second one to return.

There's no point as there are a number of modifications that can only be tested if the train works in multiple with another refurbished set. There's also no need. The network can clearly cope with it being out of service for a while longer and putting it out early just to please the odd enthusiast would be stupid

Speaking of which, uproar amongst drivers when the new car was seen to have a destination of....wait for it...."Sports Direct Arena" and not St James' !!!!
Personally I think it's just a malicious makem in the depot playing about with the destination codes.......

St James park is too historic!! I'm a Sunderland fan, but St James park will stick! Well done for such a great start to the season by the way!! Hope it continues!!

The good thing is that it hasn't snowed yet, so no extra pressure on the stock at the depot. The bad news is that we're still in November.

Hopefully it should pick up but then again I have a feeling I've said that before a while back.

Apparently it is coming back today, which from what I heard last week, has taken some people by surprise.

I did read on the Nexus site under the modernisation section and it did say too look out for the refurbished sets to enter service in early December which was of course changed as it was menturning November before.

I would hazard a guess they will aim to unveil the trains on the 5th December which is probably when the extra services will start for the Xmas shoppers. Also be interesting whether its 4072 or 4046 has came back from Doncaster, in theory you would say its the former as that unit went to Donny before 46.

In answer to your other question, looks like there will be NO metro service if strike action goes ahead which is far from ideal but not exactly a new situation as strike actions in the past which affects the whole country has involved a total closure of the metro service, I don't think there has ever been a partial service and with less staff around it would surely be too dangerous to operate a partial metro service?

I highly doubt this, sure he's not pulling your leg ?

From what I've heard both sets will have to be tested together so one can't run as a single car set just yet. Also I would doubt Network Rail would allow commissioning tests on the Sunderland line before they have been 'proved' on Metro test tracks.

Well, I am going off reports from the less than 100% reliable Facebook admittedly, BUT as I say, this friend of mine is usually very well "genned up" on what's passing through Sunderland, down to winding up at South Hylton at absurd hours of the night to see NR test trains, with the photos to prove it, and from what I can tell the sequence of events seems fairly legitimate.

Although that doesn't rule out the possibility that he was simply saving face by claiming to have seen it after having been fed "duff gen", he hasn't updated his Flickr account for this week yet to give any more idea either way.

Probably not as even the depot open day took a lot of effort and was a one-off. You'll have to wait til they enter service to have a good look at them.

The open day was fascinating. Metro is being quite protective and secretive about the refurbs!!

Apparently metrocar 4082 is now the 5th unit in Doncaster and it went down on the same day 4072 came back. There is a metrocar on this Youtube video all masked up and it is a red livery train with the red roofline which 4082 does have but you only see a small part of the car and its so far away that there is no chance of telling what the number was. Having said that, the fact I was on 4082 either last week or the week before and it was paired with 4050 but now 4050 is paired with 4037 which also backs up the idea even more that 82is in Donny however perhaps Person A can confirm this or not?

The last one I saw going down was 4061 and this has the red roof stripe as well. Have to say that I only know of 3 going down so far, so not sure where the 5 figure is coming from.

Quite a lot of duff gen going around as we have seen above, plus that Coach Alex person has a reputation of being either unreliable or making things up.

Also, sets do get swapped around for maintenance, which would explain 50 going with 37. If I see a picture of it going down then I'm worng, but I've got a feeling someone is making info up.

Can confirm that 4082 was parked up in Hylton Street yard the same day 4072 returned, and was told it would be taken away to Doncaster later that day.

Got some pics from the street (of 4072's arrival and 4082 parked up) so can post a couple tomorrow once I get them off my camera.
