Took a trip to Palmersville on Saturday. Though it looked complicated at first it was fairly simple when you got the hang of it!

Took me a few seconds to figure out why Zone A single was blanked out - but after that seems a doddle. However there are quite a few steps to go through before you can put your money in so I wonder if this will lead to increased time for buying a ticket, especially at busy times?

Went along the coast line last week and It most certainly is an improvment compare to what was there before but I must say Meadow Well looks nowhere near done and I'm wondering if paitence amongst passengers is wearing thin with all these early evening closures. Howdon looks closer to being done but still a bit of work to do. Apparently they encountered quite a few "hidden" problems hence the length of time for them to be refurbished so it'll be interesting when it will all finally be finished.

Regarding the trains, has anyone actually seen 4041 being tested out on the system? Or are they waiting for the next unit to come back and pair them together in which case I doubt they will be in PS next month which is ashame. I'm also surprised that there is no pictures or anything of the interior yet so I'm wondering if there is further work being carried out or something?

http://www.nexus.org.uk/metro/all-change - Theres an interesting page of all the details of the modernisation work including photos of Chillingham Road being completed, metrocar 4046(B) in its "shell" stage of refurbishment and one of the new ticket machines being prepared.

AFAIAA they can only do the commissioning runs with both refurbished trains - so when the next one comes back we should have a better idea of what is going on.

When I was up at the depot there was some work to be done inside, but didn't look too much to do. Not entirely sure how long the commissioning will take but as you say hopefully by next month they should be out in service.

Chillingham Rd looks much better than before but I'm not sure how they are going to keep the white panels clean for long enough - sure someone will have already been out with pen or paint and written on them. Meadow Well seems to be taking a lot longer, wonder what the problems are here?

Ive been told theres quite a few things need doing first, (No destination info in place yet for starters) theres going to be discussion of how we drivers want the door buttons for instance, and we are to have a little refresher on the new layout before it goes public, too

It will be good to see it when it is actually complete - might try and see it on its first passenger working.

Metrocar 4041 has been offically launched and named as Harry Cowans as per before its refurbishment.

You also get too see very slightly the interior floorind but sadly not alot else apart from seeing the new lighting aswell.

Hopefully(although I somehow doubt) there will be a video on the Nexus Youtube page sometime soon regarding the official launch.

On their "official" forum Nexus have intimated that there should be a video coming shortly. Pitty they couldn't have included more photos of the interior in that article, but I can already see seats have been removed to create extra space that was promised by Nexus.

Hard to tell if the wheelchair space has been moved from the middle of the carriage to the end or if there will now be two wheelchair spaces per carriage - one at the end where the former 2+1 seat was, and one near the articulated bogie.

In practice having more room for a wheelchair is good, but once you get pushchairs there then people will not want to move for a wheelchair - it isn't like a bus where the driver can control how many get on and who has priority.

From the youtube videos, it looks like to me that where the wheelchair spaces is on the pre-refurbished sets has been replaced by an extra seat which would limit the amounts of seats being lost to the larger wheelchair spaces.

As for the interior I like it, certainly improved and it will be interesting how the new lighting properly brightens up the interior. Although i'm curious to know why there is an different flooring where the centre pole is.

If the old wheelchair space has been replaced and a new one created it looks as if there will be -4 seats per Metrocar.

I've now been told that there won't be any more going down to Doncaster until the first two enter service, so this may mean the next ones going down either in December or the New Year.

It will be interesting how less seats will affect peak services but in some ways because of the larger space that is created, more people could pack into this area therefore increase the standing capacity somewhat, you don't tend too see alot of wheelchair users during the peak hours because the trains are full so maybe theres an advantage there? People with suitcases/buggies tend to be anywhere on the carriage even though there are noticetable blue circular stickers on the 2nd and 3rd doors saying "easy access" so maybe it won't be as big of a problem as you might think?

Talking about stickers on the doors, to proove my point most people probably don't notice those blue stickers, just watch how many people don't see an large red out of order sign whenever the doors are broken and they keep on pressing the button to get on(and sometimes off even!), quite amusing even if it does hold the train up at times!

That is one of the main reasons there is a lack of seats on the 378s in London - more standing room in the peak. I'm sure if there are problems with the new configuration we'll see them soon enough (although I can't see many problems happening).

As you say half the time people with buggies go elsewhere (the favourite being the 2+1 seat at the ends, where there is ust about room to stick a buggy in.

Not yet, next one is due soon (next couple of weeks).
41 is looking more the part now with destination boards and train numbers now operating. Still puzzled by that grey suitcase size thing above one drivers cab though. The 2nd one ? It arrives when it arrives, and they need both up and running before they allow them out in service. We haven't had a look around them yet - we need to, but from outside, doesn't seem too different in the drivers cab

Is it not part of the aircon?

Hi All,

My first post here, so hello everyone!

Really interested to see this thread about the TW Metro; I grew up in Newcastle, and although I now live in Bristol it's always interesting to see what's going on transport wise up there.

The new refurb looks interesting, although not as drastically different as it could have been - does anyone else think that the interiors really haven't changed that much, apart from some new seat coverings and flooring? I guess it goes along with the old 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' adage, but I was kinda hoping for something really modern and exciting!

I like the exterior paintwork on the sides, but the front looks like a mistake, like someone's dragged the 'M' bit of clipart on to the black background and not bothered reversing the colours, or something......

Does anyone know if any of the traction/control equipment is getting worked on?

Cheers!

As far as I know there hasn't been any changes to the control or traction systems.

Nah, don't think so. Probably part of the electronics being installed.
Speaking of which, uproar amongst drivers when the new car was seen to have a destination of....wait for it...."Sports Direct Arena" and not St James' !!!!
Personally I think it's just a malicious makem in the depot playing about with the destination codes.......

I know this might be a little OT, but it is to do with the T&W Metro so I might as well ask. In short, if the name of St James' Park changes, what will happen to St James Metro Station? Will the name of that change to?!

The next station is....Sports Direct Arena!

nexus issued a press release shortly after the news broke saying they have no intentions of changing the station name.

Hes a smart one, hes taking the PR backlash of the name change so that any potential sponsor wouldnt have too.

When it was changed to Sports Direct@St James' Park Nexus said at the time it wouldn't be renamed - same goes for now.

On the Open Day last year nearly all the destinations were Sunderland - plus when Harry Cowans was being re-dedicated it too had Sunderland on it!

As far as I know there hasn't been any changes to the control or traction systems.

I'll expand a bit more on this as didn't have time during the week.

The work going on down in Doncaster is to prolong the life of the actual Metrocar itself and not the traction or control system - the main bulk of the work is replacing the sections of frame which are corroding. The other work is mainly a facelift of the interior and A end cabs, along with a new livery.

Nothing else will have been touched as I expect Wabtec do not have the expertise in dealing with the undercarriage, and everything regarding the wheels/traction motors/electrics/batteries can be done better at Gosforth. Before the 'new' ones go out onto the system they'll have to have some sort of exam anyway to ensure they are trackworthy - plus then it is the comissioning runs.
