None have come back recently, although 4029 went down last week. How recent are you talking?

Have to admit I'm baffled by the decision to keep 4 cars unrefurbished, I understand perhaps keeping 4001's livery the same, as well as the livery of a standard unrefurbished metrocar but this doesnt mean that they cant be refurbished. I get the feeling nexus have gone massively overbudget on this and other projects and are trying to compensate for it in the worst possible way.

On a side note, I assume the 2 other cars that will remain unrefurbished will be 4003 and 4004? Also what is the point in keeping 4002's livery the same when it is basically an advert livery?

I think its no secret that DB has gone over budget with the refurbishments of the metrocars but you would never imagined it would get so bad that the whole fleet won't be refurbished(and with the way things are, would you be surprised if it was not more than 4 cars un-refurbished).

Station modernisation projects are also over budget and have we noticed how there is not one station refurbishment going on at the moment... The so called promise of most stations between North Shields-Byker to be refurbished by 2013 is not going to happen, Central Station should be in bits by now but this is not getting done until a later date to what i believe IMO is a bit of a cop out reason that the mainline station is supposed to be getting refurbished therefore we will wait until after then so to speak yet there is no sign of any refurbishment work going on at the mainline station and of course, it was supposely approved that West Jesmond and South Gosforth getting a refurbishment during the summer/Autumn but yet again, no signs of any refurbishments(although I believe there was protests from local residents regarding the South Gosforth station refurbishment?)

Regarding the units not getting refurbished, then I'm disappointed 01/02 are not being refurbished, all this Heritage reason is a load of nonsense to me, the only noticeable difference with these units are the doors and nothing much else! I do get a feeling though, the 4 unrefurbished cars may receive a light facelift which may include things like a new livery, new seat covers and they might even get the new lighting installed if they can afford it but apart from that, you would imagine they will look the same as before.

All in all, a little bit of a shambles if you ask me.

From what I can tell it is Nexus who are causing the problems, not DB - remember the refurbishment is being done to Nexus's specifications, so it is down to them if they haven't allocated enough funding for the refurbishment of the whole fleet, or have tried to do too much and gone overbudget. On the Nexus forum it has been said that they are putting more money towards the refurbishments to cover the shortfall.

I suspect that the reason to not refurbish 4001/02 is down to them being different to the rest of the fleet, and therefore the spec for the refurbishment would have to be altered, which of course will cost money. I'd expect the other two to not be refurbished will be the ones with the worst reliability, although the trouble at the minute is the ones damaged during the floods.

Being reported elsewhere that 4049 arrived back today, with another one going down.

enjoyed that timelapse video(if not the music), shows how much goes on behind the scenes that passengers never see and nor probably appreciate.

On the subject of 4012's front end, looks like to me its been repainted again, first time I saw it was a pale yellow colour, now its more of the standard orangy type colour which looks better imo.

I thought 4049 would be back by now, it went in August, took 3 months to complete! Going to be ages to do the rest of the fleet at this rate!

Do they still have the end doors (it was only these two that had end doors, wasn't it?).

They both had end doors whilst on test in the late 70s, but they were not specified on the production fleet. I believe 4001 and 4002 lost their end doors when they were rebuilt prior to entering service, so they never actually ran with them.

The only real difference between 4001 and 4002 and the rest of the fleet is the Kiekert plug doors that these two retain.

Well on Nexus website today a 4.1 % increase on average in fares from 2013.
<D

At least the on peak daysaver is getting scrapped though which I think is a good thing really, although I'm only assuming they are doing it because the barriers are being put in so they don't lost any more revenue.

As it happens I saw Huw Lewis at Heworth today doing an interview, did not stop by but it sounded like he was talking about the price increase, not sure if it was to local TV or some video for Nexus(did not see any local TV vans around so I assume its for the Nexus site?).

They were taken out before being put into normal passenger service. The reason for having them was so that the train could be evacuated in an emergency, but with the walkways in the tunnels, any evacuation could be done through the saloon doors or the drivers' cab door, so they were pretty much redundant. I also remember reading that they had problems with the door seals, which let water in too easily.

4089 was towed through Longbenton by 2 Battery Locos on Wednesday morning, so presumably it was this one that went down.

I've found an old magazine about the early days of the Metro to celebrate 100 years of public trnsport in Tyne and Wear. Notice the sunken headlights on 4001!!

There was a mock-up of a Metrocar before the prototypes were built, and I remember seeing a picture which shows the same type of headlights.

Nothing new, was in the ITA documents somewhere for a previous meeting.

In related news, I've been told that Metro's resident trainspotter extrodinaire has been in trouble again. Surprised they haven't banned him before now.

I would like to know if 4001/02 are actually going to be withdrawn from service for good or are they going to be spare metrocars like the other 2 unrefurbished units will be? Either way, i'm not sure why they are using the excuse of the units being pulled out of the programme for "heritage reasons". The quotes don't seem to clear in my eyes and those quotes just look like an almost exact replica what Huw Lewis has said!

I just can't see Nexus banning him in all honesty(although I obviously don't know what he done this time), it would just cause further outrage and more bad negative press against Nexus after what has been quite a tough period for them, with unreliability to service, cleaner strikes, over budget on stations and trains, the checky watch malarkey and there is probably more to add to that really. I mean if he got banned and went to the local press, then the public outcry would surely be of something along the lines of Metro bosses bullying(or harrassing as he seems to like to put it) young train enthusiast off the system but not sorting out the unreliability problems that have been going on for the last 4-6 months!

I don't know the lad and I've never talked to him(only saw him once on the system at Gosforth) but surely he must just have the common sence of just not filming on metro property? I already aired my views in this thread on the subject and I do think its uptight by Metro bosses but rules are rules I'm afraid.

Easy get out IMO - as far as I know there are no reliability issues with both 01/02 which would make them candidates for being used less frequently than any other two Metrocars. Depending on what the outcome is with the sets that were damaged in the floods, two of those may be the other ones that are not sent to Doncaster.

According to some he was causing bother when the work was on between South Gosforth and Regent Centre/Benton. Various other things being talked about, but it is all mounting up. I can understand a few isolated incidents, but it does seem that he likes going out of his way to cause trouble for staff who quite rightly are enforcing the byelaws that he is bound by when on and around the system - this trouble of course is then spun to make him look like the victim. Quite sad, seeing as he has in the past said he wants to work for the company/do work experience, which is never going to happen now.

First set of London Underground style barriers installed at Gateshead. Has anything been said on how they are going to work with current style network one pass? Will I have to take the ticket out of the wallet to put it through the barrier?

As far as I'm aware all current passes will get upgraded to the POP cards.

Just saw this - it certainly was.

As for the Network One tickets, Nexus have said that they will let people know soon (so that sounds like they will be upgraded), but the paper tickets will also be able to go through the barriers.

I managed to catch two refurbished cars at different times today(4041 + 4053) and its interesting to note that the doors closing tone on both sets hasbeen replaced by numerous beeping noises, not as annoying as the loud high pitch screeched though when the doors are released.

Its interesting too observe actually that it appears the driver may only have to press one button now(I always assume it be two buttons, one for the tone and one to close the doors), as when the beeps sound, the doors that are not open lock stright away so any passengers that are dawdling in getting off or messing on with the infamous pressing the button when the doors are clearly out of order could very well miss there stop. The doors that are open close right away as soon as the beeping stops.

If only Nexus/DB replace the door opening tone though with these beeps but its certainly an improvement on the current doors closing tone.

It was previously two buttons, which is what causes the issues with timing that are often seen,

The new system was planned from the start from what I've been told, and it was just that Wabtec were working on implementing it. (Possibly also waiting until enough units were in service, so as to cause less confusion).

Hopefully this new door alarm setup will improve the whole process.
