Is this ticket now valid on Grand Central services between Sunderland and Northallerton? I know in previous years it was only valid on TPE to Northallerton, but the new version doesn't mention any restriction (apart from only being able to use it after 08.45 M-F).

Anyone know why GC didn't accept it in the first place? I heard it was due to some dispute about how much money would be allocated to GC, but have heard nothing since.

Just answered my own question - the leaflet says not valid on GC, but the webpage does not. What would GC say if I did, make me pay the price between Eaglescliffe and Northallerton?

Validity

On trains timed to depart from 0845 Monday to Friday, anytime weekends and Bank Holidays.

Only valid within the area shown on the map below.

Valid on the services of the following Operators:

· CrossCountry

· East Coast

· First TransPennine Express

· Northern

So going by that, no its not valid on GC.

What is printed on the ticket?

Tickets valid only in trains of particular Train Companies
The validity of a ticket may:
a) be restricted to; or
b) prohibit
travel in the trains of a particular Train Company or Train Companies. Any such restriction or prohibition will be shown on the ticket.

So if it is routed "Not GC" or similar, it is not valid on GC. If no such restriction is shown on the ticket then it has to be valid as defined in NCoC.

I'm not aware of GC not accepting any rovers/rangers in their area, and the view that has generally been expressed by GC crew on here is that if there is no prohibition on the ticket it will be accepted.

An example of this would be a PRIV discounted ticket. According to the ATOC staff travel documentation these tickets are not accepted on GC. However in reality they are accepted by GC and this has been stated in the past here by GC staff.

Revenue allocation does not determine validity, and I'll bring out my usual example of this. EC gets no revenue, according to what we're told about ORCATS, for a combination of a Huntingdon to London Season and a Huntingdon to London day single or return. Yet this combination IS valid on a non-stop London to Peterborough EC train.

With three open access passenger operators up and running, we have used our best endeavours to establish the policies of these regarding acceptance of rovers. All three accept the All Line Rover, Wrexham & Shropshire and Grand Central advise us that they accept all valid rovers in their area. However First Hull Trains does accept the All Line Rover and the East Yorkshire Round Robin, but nothing else.

Perhaps the best way forward would be for 142094 to seek clarification from Grand Central on which tickets they intend to accept in 2010, and report the answer here.

I too would be interested to know. I was recently talking to a GC member of staff who intimated to me that as they were not associated with ATOC or a franchised operator then the NCoC did not apply to them!

I'm not aiming this at you, kwvr45 but the Introduction to the NRCOC (at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/system/galleries/download/misc/NRCOC.pdf) states:

It is a condition of the Passenger Licence granted to each Train Company by the Office
of Rail Regulation that these Conditions apply to tickets sold for journeys involving its
services and those of other Train Companies. There is a list of the Train Companies in
Appendix C.

And who should we find in Appendix C?

Grand Central Railway Company Limited (trading as Grand Central)

It doesn't help with this Ranger, but I think it's fairly clear the NRCOC does apply.

I suspect they'd change their mind when they found out how many millions they get in ORCATS revenue.

Well unfortunately due to a late running bus, I missed the train I was going to get and also the GC service. I might fire off an email to see what they say, usually quite quick at answering them.

According to NRES Hull Trains accept East Midlands Rover, and I had no trouble using this on their trains last week.

I have tried various times with varying degrees of success, it has always just depended which train crew were onboard. I must stress that I am always willing to pay £6 fare to Northallerton but sometimes the train crew say it is fine to travel.
