Wonder how much of the network one could cover with a two-week Rover?
Over 40 years since I embarked on such a trip in October 1983. Can still remember the route but sadly not the motive power. Dread to think what it would cost today.
Monday: Redhill, Victoria, Paddington, Plymouth (via Bristol Temple Meads), Liskeard, Looe, Liskeard, Par, Newquay, Par, Truro.
Tuesday: Truro, Falmouth, Truro, Bristol T M (via Weston), Cardiff, Swansea, Tenby.
Wednesday: Tenby, Whitland, Swansea, Shrewsbury, Aberystwyth.
Thursday: Aberystwyth, Machynlleth, Barmouth, Porthmadog, Porthmadog Harbour, Blaenau, Llandudno, Llandudno Junction, Chester, Hooton, Helsby, Chester. The Ffestiniog had been fully open for just a few months.
Friday: Chester, Manchester Oxford Road (via Sale), Piccadilly, Doncaster, Habrough, Barton, bus to Hull, Seamer, York, Harrogate.
Saturday: Harrogate, Leeds, Carlisle, Lancaster, Barrow, Preston, Kirkham, Lytham.
Sunday, at an event in Blackpool, then Blackpool North, Preston, sleeper to Inverness.
Monday: Inverness, Kyle, Inverness.
Tuesday: Inverness, Georgemas, Thurso, Georgemas, Inverness.
Wednesday: Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow Central (via Shotts), Partick, Helensburgh.
Thursday: Helensburgh Upper, Fort William, Mallaig, Morar, walk to Arisaig, Helensburgh Upper.
Friday: Helensburgh Upper, Oban, Glasgow Queen Street- Central, Carlisle.
Saturday: Carlisle, Newcastle, Saltburn, Middlesbrough, Whitby, Darlington.
Sunday (interesting weekend diversions): Darlington, Eaglescliffe, Leeds, Manchester Victoria (via Huddersfield and then Todmorden), Piccadilly, Euston (via Stoke, Bescot and Northampton), Charing Cross, Ashford.
The only accommodation I’d booked was in Lytham and the sleeper, but out of season I had no trouble in finding small hotels or guest houses each evening.
Would love to revisit some of the more scenic bits and fill in gaps, especially in East Anglia, but doubt it will happen now.
