They could do more to utilise differnt platforms when one train may sit there for 20 mins yet they shunt one in and out in front of it within say 5 mins when other platforms are empty. Seen it quite a few times. Agree that a lot of people just blindly follow people without looking at tv's or the indicator.

Well I'd say tough sh*t - as Orlov would concur "seemples" listen to the announcements and read the signage :p

Fine, but try explaining that to the passenger that has got onto the wrong train.
It will be the Guard's fault every time!!

What 'rules' are these ? At Sheffield it is normal for two trains in the same platform to have the doors open at the same time.

Perhaps it is just that people in Sheffield are intelligent

In Sheffield the two trains are often going to the same destination as well.
Leeds via Barnsley
Leeds via Dearne
Both from the bays at the same time.

Confusion usually appears when one of the trains is late so the front train arrives and goes right down to the buffer stops, meaning the other train has to move somewhere else.

To be fair there are probably good operational reasons for many (most?) of these instances, e.g. certain platforms only accessible from certain routes, or where using another platform would lead to a conflict and delay something else.

It's not that simple. Quite often a train will enter a terminal as an 8 car for example and then be split to form 2 X 4 car services back out. Impossible to therefore utilise seperate platforms.

Platform 17 at Leeds always bemuses me. In a normal hour:

- Fast train from Sheffield gets in
- Slow train from Sheffield gets in and parks in front of the fast train
- At xx33 the slow train leaves, destination "Sheffield"
- At xx40 the fast train leaves, destination "Sheffield".

I wonder how many passengers for Wakefield K, Barnsley, Meadowhall and Sheffield get on the one that leaves earlier, despite the fast train overtaking the slow one as it negotiates the Castleford section of the line? Setting the destination of the slow train as Chapeltown would help to alleviate some of those problems (like they do for slow York trains via Harrogate with the destination being set as "Poppleton")

When I'm the guard of the rear set I open the rear doors with the local switch and stand there checking tickets as passengers board - any for the front set are politely directed to the correct train. I then release the remaining doors when the road comes off for the front train. I rarely experience any problems with this practice.

I like my trains loaded early to sort out any luggage and other problems prior to departure - three minutes is not enough! <(

As an aside, in general, Glasgow Central seems to keep the doors open with multiple trains on the same platform and use mobile front/rear train boards to differentiate. This was tried at the Waverley but the through winds (sometimes from Siberia) tended to blow the boards away!

I'm sure I have seen those boards at Waverley on the bays before. Don't think I have seen them anywhere else though

That didn't happen to be Thursday 19/11 did it
221136 and 220001
If so I was driving it!!

Sadly not - 15/11 with 221119 and 220006

Was thinking about this at kings cross earlier this morning whilst walking down to my Cambridge train. The main boards in the concourse listed the train as front 4 coaches only. The board I walked past on the stops listed the train very clearly as front 4 only. On the platform there were 8 carriages. The back 4 had no lights on and all doors were closed. Front 4 had open doors, hazard lights on (fair dos not everyone knows what these are), people boarding and carriage lights on. Yet still I counted 5 people standing around the rear coaches pressing the door open button and wondering why they couldn't get on.

And people seriously believe we could trust people to find the correct coaches if 2 boarded at once?!

The average passenger doesn't give a fig which company is running his service nor distinguish between them unless perhaps he is trying to complain on Twitter to someone.

Exactly so they could easily use 2 different platforms and thus avoid the issue as they would not come in joined together.

If platform allocations were anywhere near as simple as that then you may have a point. But it's often not possible to avoid doubling up, regardless how empty other platforms may appear to be. Routes in and out over points have to all be considered along with other things.

Maybe some of these expurts should apply to the TOCs, they seem to have all the answers!

Of course we all know the TOCs double up simply because they want to p#ss the passenger's off and not because they are running more trains than there are platforms for!

Looks like have been foiled by a public who cannot see what train they get on, dodgy points and intransigence. Role on Northen Hub.
