Very, very worrying. There seem to be indications that the core has been exposed to the air, and some experts are calling it the new Chernobyl. As you can expect, the Japanese government are denying it, even though the exclusion zone appears to be 60km and they are distributing iodine to residents.

BBC News states that caesium isotopes have been detected outside the core, which suggests the core was exposed to air.

I know it's not directly related to UK railways, but some of the footage of the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake / tsunami, particularly the way that relatively modern trains like this (34 seconds in), have been literally bent in half, makes you realise how lucky we are to live in a country that in the main doesn't experience much extreme weather.

My heart goes out to all those suffering as a result of this natural tragedy.

Fair point, picky! I stand corrected... we don't experience much in the way of extreme seismic trauma.

LOL, I hope you're not serious... I think the fact that commuters had to suffer some mild discomfort (me included) as a result of a combination of ageing and poorly specified trains pales into insignificance to some world weather.

Looks like a hydrogen explosion at one of the pumping stations rather than the containment dome itself. Will have been some radiation release but may have relieved the pressure on the reactor itself.

I guess we won't know for a while - the reports have been confusing.

There are 3 people confirmed with radiation sickness already. I only hope there are no more.

Amazing footage.. that ED75 loco pulling that container train seems to have stayed on the rails, just! What is also amazing is the total destruction of the OLE, I couldn't see any pylons still standing. This may be partly due to the fact that there are many concrete OLE pylons used on Japan railways, which would have probably been smashed to pieces when they fell.

Just hope that EMU was stopped in the station at the time, and they had time to evacuate.

Having visited Japan, and Japanese railways being a big interest of mine, I hope the best for the Japanese people.

Latest BBC reports suggest temperature and pressure both going down, so hopefully no Faded Giant. And it did turn out to be a Hydrogen explosion rather than the steam circuit.

Having visited Japan, and Japanese railways being a big interest of mine, I hope the best for the Japanese people.
