I totally get why two track railway applies in the evening on four track routes but some of the knock on consequences make it worse.

EMR trains trail the Thameslink services into St Pancras. The distance involved means you pass just in front of the Thameslink departure at Bedford and catch up the one which ran the previous half-hour at Elstree & Borehamwood.

So, that adds about 15 minutes to the journey. However, if you have the misfortune to want to travel south of London, not only is your progress into St Pancras slower than ideal, but you also then can't make a connection into the train you have just followed into London.

As a consequence, you then have a half-hour wait at St Pancras for the train you saw at Bedford. This really isn't ideal late at night.

I guess the view is taken that few people will be switching between EMR and Thameslink and a 15 minute connection / hold would be needed anyway so passengers might as well wait 30 minutes.

Is there a particular journey/itinerary you have in mind?
Well, the 2220 from Derby tonight arrived at St Pancras at 0022, having followed in the Thameslink departure to Three Bridges that left St Pancras at 0022. Passengers therefore have to wait for the 0052 departure.

It happens each half hour from when two track railway starts - eg there is a 2352 arrival from Nottingham with the same issue.

One of those issues where people might say that passengers are fortunate to have services running so late.

Thanks. Yes, I see.

It's not ideal but the minimum connection time at St Pancras is 15mins; if the train waited 15 mins it would only provide around 15 mins saving for people making the connection but anyone else would be 15 mins worse off.

Yes, an unsolvable issue I thought I would write about to pass the time.
