Two Together with 3 people

Just a query regarding the Two Together railcard.

I have one card with my wife, and another with a mate I go out travelling with every month.

If the 3 of us are travelling together, how would the fares work please?

My opinion is that you could buy discounted tickets with one railcard and a full price ticket for the third person. There would be little point in buying four discounted tickets to take "advantage" of both railcards.

It would be 2 people discounted on Two Together, plus a full fare.

OR

If the TOC operates Groupsave, then a Groupsave 3.

The fares work out the same either way.

Let's assume that the fare is £100 (just to make the maths easier). Your options are:

1. Three full price tickets = £300
2. One pair of Two Together discounted tickets, one full fare ticket = £233.32
3. Two pairs of Two Together discounted tickets = £266.64

I know which option is the least hassle and cheapest.

Two full price tickets - £200, so with discount £132. Times two - £264. Or have I got something wrong there? (Rounding to whole pounds).

I think it's obvious that the question was whether three discounted tickets could be bought.

It's been discussed before; best guess is that it's at least likely to be problematic.

And the poster was told the options that were available. There's no point discussing the cost of three discounted tickets as (a) it's less than clear that you can buy three; and (b) it's less than clear that using three tickets would be valid - as proven by the threads you provided links to.

We would be doing the OP a disservice to provide advice that has the potential to result in a prosecution.

Though it probably helps him more if you do say unfortunately, you are likely to encounter problems if you simply buy three sets of discounted tickets, as the Railcard is not intended to be used in this way.

I think we should roll out "new GroupSave" (adults 34% discount of for groups of 3 up) nationally, to be honest.
