Due to travel on Friday with friend who has damaged their knee and cannot walk.
Advance Tickets booked using two persons railcard.

Have I any other options other than throw away the original tickets and book a brand new set just for me?

I found myself in the same situation. I emailed my retailer, Trainsplit, and they offered to refund one passenger's tickets, as long as I booked the same journey for one person.

Keep a look out for if the booked train(s) get cancelled which is always a possibility if travelling with Northern. You'll be due a refund then on the original tickets and possibly Delay Repay on the replacement tickets.

Good retailers will allow you to easily make a "change of journey" on your Advance and in so doing, change the Railcard and passenger details. There's nothing against this in the Advance T&C's so I think all retailers ought to be permitting it; the only things the conditions say need to remain unchanged are the:
origin, destination and Train Company or route shown on the ticket(s)

Although pragmatism needs to be used even with this, as sometimes changing to a different train will necessitate a change of fare location (e.g. London Kings Cross to London Terminals) or change of route code (e.g. "LNER only" to "LNER & Connections"), neither of which are changes In think a retailer could reasonably deny their customers.

Bear in mind that the maximum admin fee for a change of this nature remains £10, which some retailers do charge. Of course there are several that don't charge an admin fee for Advance changes, so I book all my Advance tickets through one of those!

Alternatively, you could try going to a ticket office and excessing away the Railcard restriction on both tickets, or getting an excess to change the Railcard restriction on one of the tickets to another Railcard (if you also have e.g. a 16-25 or Senior Railcard). No guarantee either option would be offered though - it's very much something that is discretionary.

Whilst I'm aware it would technically be against the rules, if I had this scenario in the Ticket Office, I'd probably refund the original tickets (possibly needing authorisation from my accounts team/manager with it involving Advance tickets) if they'd been bought from the Ticket Office I work at, then sell new tickets.

Of course I should be able to excess the original tickets, but I suspect my Star Ticket Machine would refuse to do so. (it won't allow any excesses being made with Two Together railcard applied- I could "fudge" it by pretending it was a different type of railcard, but personally wouldn't do this incase it opened a can of worms, with the customer being later challenged for having the wrong railcard, although of course this is irrelevant in the OP's scenario.)

What would my fellow ticket office colleagues do in this scenario?

You're quite right! Thankfully I've not experienced this problem myself, but it's certainly a major flaw with the system.
Is it 'Two Together Railcard' discounted tickets that can't be excessed, or Advances, which one might expect?

We have had a Two Together for a number of years now and fortunately never encountered this problem, but have often wondered what the options would be should it arise?

I’m fully cognisant of the the terms and conditions of the card that demand both card holders travel, but really what is the negative effect on the TOC if a sole passenger presents both tickets and the card?

Is it just a case of the rules say you can’t do it, with zero pragmatism applied or am I missing something?

Star Ticket Office Machines for some unknown reason won't allow you to excess tickets which have a Two Together Railcard discount applied.

So what would you do if you had to excess one? Lie about the original/new discount? Write a note and stamp it? Endorse the rear?

I’ve never used Star but I would hope that the old phrase “where there’s a will, there’s a way”, would apply.

Not even if you set it for 2 Adults? Or does it only let you Excess one ticket at a time?
That's right. You can set up the machine with 2 Adults with Two Together discount, but when you press excess ticket, it states "cannot excess this ticket."

Yes it really should be valid for 'on the presentation of two tickets' not 'two people' if you know what i mean.
