Two separate tickets

I am currently on the Night Riviera sleeper on the way into Paddington. I have a ticket bought on the GWR app for this train. It’s running late. So I’ll miss my train from Kings Cross to Doncaster on my advance ticket bought on the LNER app. Should I amend my LNER ticket on the app and pay the fee to change it or just take the next service from Kings across and tell staff on board I’m on a later train because the sleeper was late?

Assuming the tickets are X to Paddington and London Kings Cross to Y, then it would be advisable to pay the necessary amendment fee for a later LNER train. The DelayRepay from the Night Riviera will, I hope, be useful towards the cost.

If you did not amend, it would be down to staff discretion whether to pass your ticket given the delay inbound.

Had you purchased one through ticket for your entire journey, or otherwise not left a "gap" in the middle, you would have been in a better position with respect to taking the next available LNER train.

Too late now for this particular case but why would you not be able to take the next available train (potential hassle aside)? From what has been stated, they had an advance ticket to Paddington and an advance ticket from Kings Cross, presumably with the relevant connection time in the middle. Tube journeys are covered by fixed links so I don't see why they should be treated as separate journeys (advance tickets to London U1 resolve this issue instantly I know as there is then no "gap" in the middle).

Depends how long the OP has allowed to cross London. If it's under 45 minutes (50 minutes between 0530 and 0659), then it wouldn't be shown as a valid connection for a through ticket, so there's no official entitlement to be accommodated on the next train.

If the OP was booked on the 0555 from Kings Cross this morning, changing the ticket would have been appropriate. If it was for the 0615 I would expect LNER staff to have allowed travel on the next trains to Doncaster at 0633 or 0703. However, I agree that purchasing a ticket through to Zone U1 would have been advisable so as to remove the gap.
