Please let me introduce myself. I joined this site today and have a lifelong interest in railways, although I’ve never been employed in the industry. I’ve just retired from working in transport and traffic management, but mainly with roads. My interest in railways leads me to ask two questions about HS2 and I wondered if anyone on this site could shed any light on them.
Some 15 years ago I was at a presentation about HS2 in Manchester, to Chartered Engineers. During question time, I asked why the route was to run via Heathrow since the M1 corridor route seemed a much more logical choice. I said Heathrow shouldn’t be necessary, but that it would force the continuation to run via the Chilterns, which would lead to masses of objections. The answer was that it had already been decided and very little more, yet lo and behold the Heathrow imperative was later dropped. Nevertheless, despite the M1 corridor offering many advantages including a cost saving of some £20bn, no change has even been considered.
So question 1 – is the refusal to change now that Heathrow has been downgraded, purely because it would be too politically embarrassing to do so (both in Government and among HS2 hierarchy)?
And question 2 – was HS2 considered as complete project, or is the truth that Phase One was considered in isolation with nothing more than lip service to anything beyond Birmingham? This then led to Phase Two being designed with Phase One as a given, which of course makes Phase Two vulnerable and hence the crazy talk that in order to save money, it may only ever go as far as Birmingham. Was it really always a complete project to benefit the country or is any talk of this just a smokescreen to cover the mistake of not actually doing so?
I would be very pleased to learn more about the project from anyone who knows about it!
