Two earthquakes hit Melbourne

Tonight at nearly 6.20pm a twin Earthquake struck in the South East of Melbourne, around the areas of Frankston, Cranbourne and the Mornington Peninsula.

They reckon the epicenter was in the town I live in. At first I thought a large tree had fallen down, but there were none big enough where I was, so then I thought it was thunder but the weather wasn't right and so it was an earthquake.

Frist one reached 2.5 on the Richter scale and the other at about 3.

No damage was noticed at home, nor were there any reports of injury. Some people did notice cracks in walls etc.

Recently there have been a few small earthquakes, all quite small but quite noticeable.

Has anyone else ever experienced an earthquake? Are earthquakes felt in the UK?

I think we have had one-or-two in the past but nothing really serious.

Had one just off the coast of Folkestone in the channel
that was 4.2 I think

I have never felt one but we do occasionally get some quakes in the UK. That said, it's hardly the San Andreas fault.

There was quite a noticeable one across the Midlands (of the UK) either late 2007 or early 2008. It happened at about 22h00 or 23h00, and many of my friends who were working late in Sheffield's rather shabby twenty storey nineteen-sixties Arts Tower reported quite a terrifying shake. Me, I was fast asleep. I was woken up by my Italian housemate (who was admittedly always rather panicky about things) who insisted he'd felt an earthquake.

I told him to stop being hysterical and went back to sleep

I have never felt one but we do occasionally get some quakes in the UK. That said, it's hardly the San Andreas fault.

There are a lot of earthquakes, it's just that only a tiny number of them are large enough to be felt.

I remember in Reading feeling a bit of a tremor at the same time as the Birmingham mini quake

There was an after shock noticeably felt a short time after midnight.

No injuries reported, damage was very minimal with people reporting cracks in walls etc. One man was trapped in his home after cracks in a wall dislodged a door frame forcing a door to be jammed.

Fire crews were kept busy in nearby Mt Eliza which is a 'mountain' type landscape 10km to the West of the effected area. Not sure what was going on, probably monitoring for burst water mains or gas leaks.
