Twitter in football

Football fans will note doubt be aware that there have been various stories in the past few months about players voicing their opinions about various subjects regarding their respective club on twitter.

The most recent one being Joey Barton, and (along with Jose Enrique) he blasted the clubs transfer policies. As a result Barton has been transfer listed, which I think will be a disaster for Newcastle.

So, I ask the question, is twitter appropriate in football?

Keeps Sky Sports News busy with continual quotes! With most 'professionals' there is a time and a place to comment or not...then again there's Mr J Barton of course....

Would agree with that. Personally I don't see the point in telling followers (often random) what you're doing... :roll:

As long as it is used appropriately it is fine, however some professionals seem to be taking it to the next level now. Slagging their bosses off etc etc, but how can the management draw the line for 'mis use' of it?

I think what the eye doesn't see, the mind doesn't worry about applies there although I wouldn't trust anything I posted on facebook if I were famous. Your friends might be diligent but friends of friends may not be.

Along the lines of "Anything which can portray the organisation/club and any of its staff in a negative manner." Stick it into the contract of employment and they're stuck.

Most other industries have accepted Twitter is here to stay. So should football. Accounts are either personal/professional. If tweeting in a personal capacity, footballers should say what they like. They know the chance is their boss will read it.

If tweeting in a professional capacity, ie representing their employer and usually only tweeting at work, then it's a different matter.

Ie the bloke who runs the LM twitter feed would be foolish to blast LMs drivers having a BBQ and thus making him late to work that morning. On the other hand, in his personal twitter feed he'd be at liberty to do so.

I have no problem with what Joey Barton is doing. It is up to him how he communicates, although if I were him I'd "man up and say it out loud first".
