Following on from my comment on a closed thread about the bay platform at Twickenham:

'Twickenham has two up (east-facing) bays, one of which has been disused for years and the track half-lifted, the other has been fairly recently been relaid. The latter is odd as it can't be accessed from the down line except by way of a couple of reverses. I've never seen anything in it, including on the days a year of heavy additional traffic for the rugby ground. I guess that it might be used for overnight stabling.'

I noticed the other day that a down to up fast crossover has been installed to the west of St Margarets, which, by using the up slow to up fast crossover, now enables direct access for down services into the bay platform.

I think the enabler for it is the Feltham area re-signalling. It's much easier to add the necessary signalling changes in when re-signalling than trying to graft them on to the existing obsolete installation.

This gets occasional use bringing down services into platform 4 at Twickenham, with trains reverting to right-road either on the junction immediately west of the station or at the new Stoop Junction (the intended purpose of which is quite unclear to me - it seems only useful if a train is stuck at BEF2133 awaiting a route towards Strawberry Hill).
