Tweedbank

Planning a trip on the Borders Railway next week, and was considering a stopover for an hour at Tweedbank to keep the other half happy.

Had a quick look on google/maps and it doesn't look like there's much at the end of the line - it looks like breaking the return at Galasheils would be a lot better in terms of finding a cafe etc?

Tweedbank isn't a great place to stop although you could get a bus or taxi to the lovely town of Melrose where there's plenty to keep you entertained. I walked and it is manageable, but it takes over half an hour and isn't the best walking route so it's much better to get the bus or a taxi.

Otherwise Galashiels station deposits you in the heart of the town, and whilst I've not been there seems to be plenty there as well. You'll miss the last stub of the line for your coverage, though.

Galashiels is a better place to stop. When I did the steam last month I travelled to Tweedbank but then came back to Galashiels to have some lunch.

When the train gets to Tweedbank I'd stay on and go back to Gala then spend your hour there.

There is a fair few cafes etc and Wetherspoons is within five minutes walk of the station for some lunch and then get the train back an hour later.

As above, there is nothing at Tweedbank station itself apart from a car park.

When I travelled last month I went down to Tweedbank, got out and realised this, so jumped back on the same train, got off at Galashiels and spent half an hour in the Transport Interchange directly across the road from the station which has toilets and a nice cafe. As all you have to do is cross the road you need only leave 2 or 3 minutes before your train is due.

Tweedbank will become like Ore on Southern services to Hastings, nothing much around and the trains mainly empty

Thanks folks. As I suspected, I'll stay on and return back to Gala. While it would be nice to venture further into the Borders, I think there will be other commitments and not enough time including getting back to Edinburgh for a VTEC connection.

Sounds like that's the best idea.

However, the next time you travel the line, the attractive town of Melrose is well worth a visit, as I found out recently, and it's only a couple of miles beyond Tweedbank.

The pictures show the town square, the abbey, and the former railway station from the approach road; any future re-opened station at Melrose would be brilliantly situated just yards from the town centre.

guess it would be about 30-45 minutes straight between the two, but I went round Galashiels before heading back to the station
