I will be watching. I have had one of the "Seconds from disaster" used in a training course before as an instructional video highlighting duty of care in safety critical roles.

I find the programs in the past have been well made, clearly written and of high quality, I hope tonights program is as good.

Also running at 0100 if like me you can only record one programme at a time and the Mrs has already set Doc Martin to be recorded.

Good heads up though !

Typical kack when it came to the signallers part though:roll:

Pardon my ignorance, but what are the facts? I was a little sceptical over the claim that it took 18 seconds to turn the HST signal to red.

I have two question after watching this.

1) The stop message. Does this really happen as I thought it was a verbal message over the cab radio rather than a visual message?

2) After signal SN109 why would the point have been at reverse not normal. I thought two points that form a cross-over are cross-interlocked so they are either both normal or both reverse (or was the signal diagram they showed not the correct one?)

There were a lot of errors in an otherwise well done programme.

The stop message does happen...but not like that! On our GN units you get a loud continuous bleep with STOP displayed on the CSR screen.

Also they showed the Thames train leaving Paddington with a series of red lights, rather like a racetrack start,as its ready to start signal!

I had the same thought as well. I have looked on Rail Archives at the track diagram and the line that the Thames Turbo was on (Line 3) ended after signal SN109 by either converging on to the Down Relief or the Up Main. I have attached the link as it shows it far better than I can describe it.

I also noticed that and that it was odd to show this especially when they later mention green and amber  aspects.

I believe the track layout (in particular the lack of flank protection) was brought into question in the investigations.

My comment earlier was directed at the way they portrayed the signallers VDU with the moving trains which was completely inaccurate and imo gave the viewer a completely different (and incorrect) impression on how the signaller sees things.

Track circuits do not fill up like a progress bar!

That's a far more valid concern than the bit of third rail footage that I spotted... oops, must do that AQ test again :)

Pretty much, although there was the usual formula of mystery and suspense, the annoying "review" after the advert breaks, a little dash of poingnancy, and of course the "reveal" at the end which is part of so many TV docutainments.

Not really the fault of the producers though, who have to sell these series to ratings-driven TV executives.
