Turbostar Exhaust "Box"

Hi all,

Been snooping around the RAIB website and found a pic of the Turbostar that leapt off the tracks at Waverley last month. I've noticed that for some reason it's exhaust pipe enters a large box, turns through 180 degrees and then exits the box and then turns 45 degrees or so and then goes straight up.

Does anyone know why the exhaust performs such a strange route compared to other trains? Is that box an exhaust gas economiser (boiler enveloped around the exhaust basically!) or something like that?

Or is it a really a strange-looking silencer

I've always been curious when sat at Inverness looking out of the window of my 158 awaiting departure up north and spotted the Turbostar's odd exhaust arrangement and wondered what on earth it was for!

Thanks for clearing that up for me Chris!

I haven't seen a silencer that coils around itself like that before so I think that's what threw me a bit. I wonder why it's coiled and not straight through like in most applications; something to do with getting the exhaust gas pressure right perhaps?

All silencers are chambered inside. It's probably that configuration to fit the vehicle.

A right I see, I can sort of visualise how it works now! Thanks for clearing that up folks.

In fact a silencer has this twisted shape because it slows the exhaust gases: the slower it goes, the quitest it comes out.
That's why a Turbostar makes a hell of a noise when leaving in a "closed" station
