Tunnel flood, nr. Stalybridge.

A friend has just tweeted that the tunnel near Stalybridge is flooded and so they're stuck on the train there.

How does the railway deal with a problem like a flooded tunnel? Are there ways of draining or pumping the water out?

My guess is one on the Huddersfield side of Stalybridge as that friend lives in the Huddersfield area and appeared to be travelling home from work... don't know if that helps?

Reading what you say above makes me wonder if I should ask the question "are there are any tunnels on the Manchester side of Stalybridge""

Water was coming through the tunnel wall about 40 foot into the stalybridge end of stalybridge tunnel and flooding the down line. Suprisingly the up line was unaffected. Further to this 1E75 hit a fallen tree (an evergreen) at the huddersfield end of stalybridge tunnel causing damage to the train. With flooding affecting the calder valley and sout TPE services also using Huddersfield as a diversion due to problems at Dore and overhead wire problems at oxenholme that essentially destroyed TPEs network today.

One tram line closed to East Didsbury because of damage caused by tree falling on overhead wires.

Problems now further north in the Newcastle area. Line problems to the east and north of Newcastle.

Flooding and signalling problems north of Newcastle. EC & XC turning back at Newcastle at present. Normal service south at the mo apart from one or two residual TPE cancellation owing to stock and staff out of place or hours.

BBC website is saying a tram was damaged?

In the North West, a tree fell on to overhead power lines in Withington in Manchester, causing damage to a tram on the Metrolink network. No-one was injured.

The flooding Stalybridge and Mossley was horrendous for the area. A lot of houses damaged by the torrential rain and floods. Was a nightmare for people.

The tunnel between Ashton and Stalybridge is called 'Katherine Street Tunnel' there is also 'Stalybridge Tunnel' just after Stalybridge station heading towards Mossley and there is also 'Scout Tunnel' just before Mossley. I'm a northern Train Driver

Myself and another member were on the last EMT to get through on Monday to Sheffield. It was meant to avoid Sheffield due to late running due to a tree on the line at Widnes but that got canned. We were stuck behind a late running stopper and there was a TPE just behind us. Nothing else got through afterbthat until this morning (I noticed the first train of the day probably went via Huddersfield)
