Anecdotally Mondays and Fridays seem to be the lowest for commuting; would there be value in having a significantly more frequent timetable Tuesday to Thursday to ensure there isn't over capacity that a general increase mon/fri might produce?

I think there are a few operators that already have approximately those type of services, instead of Saturdays Excepted it's more Mon-Thu or Tues-Thu instead; possibly Chiltern or one of the London & South East area commuter operators?

I forget details, sorry. Someone will likely be along that remembers better the specifics than I do! ;)

Yes, Chiltern have an extra 07:46 Princes Risborough - Marylebone & return (17:31) on Tues-Thurs.

SWR also have an extra 07:52 Surbiton - Waterloo train in the morning Mon-Thurs.

That first one is definitely the Chiltern one I was thinking of and I had an idea SWR had something of a similar nature; thank you for confirming

Both Southeastern and GTR have instances of booked 8 car instead of 12 car (for instance) on Mondays and Fridays to reflect the lower demand* on those days

* Having said that, demand on Monday is still behind but catching up with Tues - Thurs

For example 0610/0640/0710 Kings Lynn-Kings Cross and 1739/1809/1839 Kings Cross-Kings Lynn are all 12 cars south of Cambridge TWTh but 8 cars throughout MF.

Indeed - and they run with 12 cars south of Cambridge on Monday as well from the December timetable change

You keep a SX base and add the extras. I don't think we would ever get to a point of a different TWTh timetable if that is what you mean.

My preferred morning train 07:39 Sanderstead to Victoria is 12 M-Th and 8 Friday. Still plenty of space on Friday.

Shortening consists to match the lower demand is one thing - given the fact that most Monday and Friday commuters are likely to be 5-day-a-week commuters, cutting service frequency on those two days may well lose the railways their custom (and money) on the other three days as well. If cutting frequencies means a journey prolonged by 5 or 10 minutes that's probably tolerable - any more than that and people who have alternatives may well start to use them (especially if high cancellation rates continue). If you're talking about adding extras Tue - Thu that's different - but don't forget Saturdays as well, although the extras will be needed at different times and in different places.

Chiltern also run a few shorter booked formations on Monday and Friday on certain services.

As is the other 12 car M-T SN Oxted diagram on Fridays (8.09 Sanderstead). The only 12 car services on the Oxted Line on Fridays are the TL ones.

Thanks. And the Thameslinks are sometimes 8 cars; and about as frequently cancelled…
