On one side of the argument, the workers have had no guarantees about their future job security, and have every right to strike now while the issue is on the table rather than in the future when they're about to be sacked and strike is useless.

On the other side, I'd like to know how much responsibility the workers had in bringing Metronet's downfall. After all whether the works work hard or idle has a key effect on efficiency. This is even more important if the management is poor.

A lot of the Metronet staff are the day-to-day,staff looking after fleet, pumps, lifts, escalators, test trains, signals and track.

A lot of the re-newel work is outsourced to the shareholders and incurs a lot of waste. Thn there is the huge papertrail and licensing for working on LUL Premises!

Also, why should former Metronet staff be special, any company could collapse at any time and nobody else has any special protection.

Because few other places have such strong unions. I think if the people on strike compared their deal with that of a lot of other sectors, they might realise they're not badly done to at all. Lots of companies go into administration and the staff are redundant overnight.

After all whether the works work hard or idle has a key effect on efficiency. This is even more important if the management is poor.

True. When our local bus company shut down the other week drivers were up in arms - although it was their working practices which directly caused the companies downfall.

It's pathetic. We'd oughta hire some Polish crew, they'd make it Europe's best rail system probably :|

London Underground staff get loads of pay, I read somewhere one driver received just over £32k annually, with 14 weeks holiday, full pension, UK rail pass and Free transport on Underground and most London buses.

I can see a brighter future for the LUg.

I bet if Virgin or First took over this wouldn't happen. Actually, with First it probably would :)

Virgin Capital - Introducing the new Capitalia - The Pendalino - UNDERGROUND!

First LondonCiti - Introducing the HSAU (High Speed & Acceleration Underground Unit) - also known as the New Adelante - UNDERGROUND!

Undergroundliner - The new metro system from Freightliner Group. Introducing the new Shedmetro! Class 66 redefined.

which one do you prefer lads?

One of the main reasons for the overspend was the shareholders awarding themselves contracts because there are alot of construction projects going on throughout the network it was the perfect opportunity for Balfour Beatty to make themselves some extra cash as with bombardier they sought to build and the trains with the intention to take over and eventually maintaun them hense making themselves a substantial profit.

I was affected by the strike, and I fully support the strikers actions.

I've worked for plenty of companies without strong unions, or without unions at all, and when things start going wrong they just sack people. Its a kind of knee jerk reaction for most of them.

I'd much rather work in an industry that has a stong union to protect my interests. Its one of the things that attracted me to the rail industry.
