There have been a lot of Tube strikes happening this past year. I'm just wondering why now? Why are there a huge wave of strikes this year and not previous years?

Are you even vaguely aware of what is happening domestically or even globally?

There is a cost of living crisis and it is even more acute in the UK.

The government is in free fall and the working classes are in a very dire situation as such it has got to a breaking point and I expect things to get worse before they improve with health sector and education sector strikes following closely.

However tube staff are striking for what reason when they are well paid, infact far better than the striking TOC staff who earn on average 10k less than the tube staff and do far more work than tube staff who just hide in the office for most of their shift

The issue at the moment is job cuts on stations, which to be fair is a significant issue. A few years ago LU brought in a review known as “fit for the future stations”, the same review which closed all booking offices, however another element was a complete restructure of how stations are staffed. It’s fair to say station staffing and operation hasn’t been right since - constant issues. 600 job cuts on stations will make this all significantly worse.

There’s other issues bubbling away beneath the surface too. There is a review of pensions going on, which seems to be more centred around Johnson’s pathological hatred of TFL rather than any pragmatic reason. There is also work going on looking at train staffing practices, though nothing firm has emerged from this yet. These will probably be 2023’s headline issues, and at some point pay will be added to the list of issues as the current pay agreement runs out.

The political undercurrent doesn’t help. Johnson seems to have had a thing about TFL. It doesn’t really help that every now and again driverless trains get mentioned, just to inflame things more. I know people in LU who are normally reluctant to strike, but who went out last Thursday because they’re absolutely sick of being treated as collateral political damage in the constant sh*t-show that’s been going on between the government and mayor.

At the end of the day if the government can find money to lavishly throw at people on benefits, why shouldn’t people in the public sector who go to work be paid, especially as many of these will be the so-called “key worker heroes” who not so long ago were being praised for turning up to work during Covid?

I’d suggest the real issue is a government who have made a complete mess of pretty much *everything*, and this week have made a last throw of the dice in the deluded hope they can still win the next election.

For a start, the strikes are not over pay. Secondly, most LU station staff are more highly trained than their counterparts working for Tocs or Network Rail, being expected to take track access and solve operational problems such as securing points or operating section switches.

I really hope this was made in jest, or even if it isn't is a specific jab at something/one you have detailed proof for because it's in very poor taste. I happen to know a few staff still at locations like Waterloo and Victoria that could probably "enlighten" you about the realities of NOT hiding in an office on shifts that would probably reduce someone like you to a quivering wreck.

Do carry on.

As someone who does "hide in the office for most of my shift", you couldn't be further from the truth. The fact that you see fewer visible staff on stations is the precise reason for the strikes; LUL want to cut another 600 jobs on top of those over the last few years. This means fewer staff, with less training, and results in a less safe network.

As mentioned, LUL staff are generally trained to a much higher standard than elsewhere; I couldn't do my job without their diligence and support and, having also had to deal with incidents where staff have not been immediately available, fully understand the potential for increased disruption should numbers be slashed further.

LUL is not striking over pay. Try doing a little bit of research before wading in. :)

Honestly, this is actually rather inflammatory language. How do you know how much work a LUL employee does? There is a lot more to being a part of the railway than just standing on the platform or being on the train.

Who keeps London moving? Oh yes, London Underground Staff, who don't 'Hide in the office for most of their shift'. Don't take them for granted next time.

Yeah, Staff at Victoria Underground and Victoria Railway station are some of the nicest staff you can find despite all the bad stuff they have to put up with. That goes probably for all Staff as well.

We can’t really blame people for being anti Tube staff (or railway staff in general), as there have been constant attacks from the current crop of politicians for some time now.

Taking the biscuit was Truss, who in her second / final PMQs mentioned railway staff I think 4 times. A little rich for someone who had just trashed the economy…

Alright but it was quite out of line considering this person has no idea what a tube staff member does and has no regard for Railway staff.

Not disagreeing, just making the point that the politicians need to bear some responsibility for all this. The way this country has been run over the last few years has been disgraceful.

Yes

The attitudes that some of them have is that is better to try and neutralise and desist the enemy to make yourself look good rather than try and try and look favourable on your own accord rather than putting others down. In this example in regards to Railway Staff and NHS for that matter oh and also throw in any public service employee

As of this week, it now seems we can add anyone that earns money to the list of people this government seems to have a grudge against!
