The alternative is to get a cab from Paddington to King's Cross. I recently got a cab from Marylebone (nearer I know) to St Pancras and it came in just under a tenner. London may be quieter as a lot of office staff will be working at home etc.

Are the TOCs kind with their goodwill in terms of people missing their advance trains due to the tube strikes and allowing customers onto the next service?

On the day of the last tube strike (Thu 9th July) myself and two friends were travelling from work near Victoria station to Edinburgh for my stag weekend, booked on the 17:00 from King's Cross.

We booked a taxi for 15:55 which hadn't arrived by 16:10, so used the uber app which sent a car by about 16:15. Unfortunately, despite getting out and walking the last 3/4 mile which was faster than the traffic was moving, we still arrived at King's Cross about 17:10.

We went to the information desk on the concourse, where we were advised to the ticket office and explain what'd happened, and they'd do what they could. In the ticket office, when they heard our explanation they were happy to stamp our tickets and write instructions on them to allow us on the 18:00.

However, they did ask us how long we'd allowed ourselves to get across London (and were happy with 1 hr 5 min) - dunno if in this case may feel that not enough time was left?

There'll be rather a queue for taxis and getting one isn't very likely to be easy. Depending on how much luggage the OP has, they could also consider a Boris bike (though while remembering that bikes, and free docking spaces at the other end, will be at least as scarce as taxis)

I think you misunderstand. The fact that disruption on this level is going ahead - a second time - makes it clear that either they don't know how much of a problem this is, or they don't care. Strikes aren't a fact of life. Although the relevance of this to missing your train may not be very clear cut as has been pointed out.

An update: After much consideration and anxiety, I decided to change my departure time from Kings Cross yesterday. But alas it was neither easy or problem free. As I don't live in the UK, I had made the original booking via the Virgin East Coast Website. I followed the instructions to amend my original booking, trying to obtain a "Advanced Super Anytime" ticket, which, thanks to your advice, which would give me multiple choice of off peak trains. Unfortunately every time I tried to proceed with payment, it would comment "Not enough time for deliver, please choose another delivery option" I assumed that the orginal booking was done online, and I used the free "print" option, could do the same with this ticket. I called the London office at my expense and asked what was going on, and the operator advised me that probably couldn't do this, and best just to book another ticket and return the original one for a refund for a grand total of around 2 pounds. Obviously that wouldn't be worth it, so I persevered, trying the Advance Anytime with choosing a particular train, it worked up to the point of delivery, and again, I couldn't go further. Finally after two hours, I managed to change the original ticket to a later booked train at 2 p.m. I could not get a Anytime ticket. I am hoping that with 4 hours I should have enough time, but hey, who knows? My original cost of the journey would have been 3 pounds on my Oyster card. I have now spent, nearer 60 pounds as I have bought a Heathrow Express ticket just to get to my family. I have written, as suggested, to National Rail, Virgin East Coast just to advise them of my adventure. Not sure what good it will do, but I do appreciate all your advice. Wish me well!

Amendments to tickets this close to departure would need to be done in person at a station, as I indicated earlier. You would not have needed to pay so much if you had done this.

"Advanced Super Anytime" and "Advance Anytime" are not the names of tickets that Virgin Trains sells. If you can specify the precise name of the ticket, we may be able to give you further assistance. In particular, if you have bought a completely new Super Off-Peak or Anytime ticket (as opposed to changing your Advance ticket), these are refundable if unused, subject to a £10 administrative fee.

The actual cost of the ticket, including refund and change of date charge of 10 pounds, was only another 14 pounds. I just really wanted to avoid queues, and problems at Paddington to save time to be honest. I also thought that since I had bought the ticket online, then any changes I made, were to be done online. The Virgin East Coast person I spoke to also didn't confirm your advice, just to buy another ticket outright for 26 pounds (at the present time, they vary quite a bit) so I thought this was the better option. The other expense was the Heathrow Express etc..I suppose living in Italy I never take Customer service for granted...Island..

Permit to travel, it was a nightmare! My flight arrived early, I got through passport control in 10 minutes my "priority" suitcase was the last to be delivered. Heathrow express was good. Paddington was a sea of people at the bus stop where I was told the 205 hadn't passed for an hour and a half. I gave up and walked it. My feet are killing me. ??????

000. I wouldn't have made my initially booked train but made the 2nd amended train easily.
