Tube photography

Hi All,
Popping to London shortly ,and was wondering if theres any good or bad spots for getting quick pics or vids on the underground where theres no hassles ,thinking of west brompton ,dollis hill perhaps ,and is the policy of no filming applicable still on sub surface stations or looking onto lul from a lol station gets around it ,no clear answers anywhere.

From public land there is no problem. there are quite a lot of suitable overbridges around the system which offer a good view. there's one five minutes walk north of Harrow on the Hill which, when looking back towards Harrow, is particularly good.

On the stations, if you're just there for 5 - 10 minutes there is a "passing through" rule which means you shouldn't have a problem.

If you're going to spend ages on a station, however, you'll be expected to fork out up front for a "student and non-professional permit". there are, however, a number of station supervisors around the system who are quite sympathetic and understanding of enthusiast needs, and a polite word on arrival will often work wonders.

Hi Peter,thats very informative thanks very much for your help ,im always wary on the passing through rule with some horror stories ive heard .it wouldonly be a short time at each station as lots to fit into the day ,im looking at harrow on the hill on youtube now and looks quite busy ,i assume its a safe area in the day on the bridge .

Yes, I've used that bridge several times with no problems. Be aware, though, you can only view one side at a time as you need to use the underpass to cross the road. Best angle is looking towards the station - you'll see why when you're there.

I was just passing though Edgeware Road and being with friends including one visiting from stateside, we thought we grab a quick photo of a LUL service arriving as we were on the footbridge - no flash or tripods were out.

member of staff in civils came up and said sorry you can't photo here as you need a pass, if that passing though rule exists then they weren't aware of it.

Equally I asked one of my regular commuters who's a DM with London Underground and his opinion was don't use flash, tripod or get in way of other users and you should be fine.

My experience has always been as Peter Mugridge described it. 10-15 minutes and then move on, I have photo'd and filmed without any problems. If I see a member of staff around I usually say 'is it OK if I take a couple of photos of the trains' and have never been refused, just asked not to use the flash.

I've been taking photos/videos on the Underground for almost 3 years now, and only twice had a problem with staff. In both cases, rather than arguing I just said "Ah ok" and moved on to the next station!

thanks for all your help ,very kind and informative i have before quickly filmed at queens park but was very nervous lol ,and have done at willesden jct with no problems and kensington to ,im very used to the network rail way of things but as we all know london underground is a different kettle of fish ,i fancy trying somewhere away from bakerloo and district ,so harrow is very appealing now ,especially with chiltern going through there to ,and i have found a good link between victoria and harrow on the hill and then to get back across to willesden .
has anyone tried west hampstead out of interest ,im passing through there on my return so might try there to

cheers to you for advice ,i went to harrowon the hill yesterday and found the bridge and very good it was to with friendly locals ,got some good shots and done some odd bits here n there on the tube ,didnt even see any staff lol ,will post a link soon many thanks

Seeing you have already been now I was going to say Harrow on-the-hill is what I recommend. I have taken some ok shots from there, even though im a crap photographer; here's a few:

One good place for photos that are actually underground is Highgate on the Northern line. The platform is a lot longer than the train, so it's a lot easier to get a photo while the train is stopped to avoid it being blurred.

Im going again on May 6th ,so may try Highgate and have a bash at West Brompton which i didnt get time for
