Tube Journey Outside Zone 6

I am thinking about the 38 stock trips in September i will have a one day travelcard for zones 1-6 just wondering what the best method is to use to pay for travel to Amersham after zone 6 contactless or purchase an oyster ?

Unless you are eligable for a railcard discount, or have a travelcard loaded on the oyster, there is little reason to use oyster over contactless these days.

With both oyster and contactless you have the problem that you will have to pay for the whole journey from touch-in to touch-out, not just the part of it not covered by your travelcard. For weekly and longer travelcards this can be avoided by holding the travelcard on oyster, but day travelcards are not avaialble on oyster.

If you are talking about off-peak travel then the zone 1-9 travelcard is just £1 more than the zone 1-6 version. Just specify Amersham as the origin station and the route will say "AAA Zones 7-9". Before 0930 on weekdays the difference is £5.70.

Presumably the OP is referring to having an outboundary Z1-6, and of course you cannot upgrade those to 1-9. The most effective solution would be getting off at Moor Park and tapping in.

We need to know where the OP is travelling from. If it's from somewhere like Cambridge then a return to Liverpool Street (GA only) is £15.90, contactless from Liverpool Street to Amersham is £4.80 each way so total £25.50

This compares to a Cambridge to London Zones 1-6 Travelcard (GA only) costing £21.70 plus contactless from Moor Park to Amersham £2.00 each way. Total £25.70

Using contactless from central London to Amersham avoids the need to step back a train at Moor Park to switch from the Travelcard to contactless.

Well I hadn't considered that the travelcard would be combined with a journey from beyond London. so maybe I haven't provided the answer?

Starting Station will be huntingdon and Senior Railcard is held if this is worth adding to Oyster or not

There are a few different off peak and super off peak tickets you could buy, so the answer to this question could make a difference.

One option for a weekday after 8:59 (prices given with a railcard discount) is:
Huntingdon-Boundary Zone 6 (or -Hadley Wood, if that's easier for you to buy) off peak day return: £17.60
Zone 1-9 travelcard: £10.60
Total: £28.20

It's for either the 9th or 10th of September so a weekend. The super off-peak fares apply for Huntingdon to Hadley Wood at £11.60.

Moor Park to Amersham using contactless is £2.00 each way. If you add your railcard discount to Oyster it is £1.30 each way
Total 23.60 or £22.20 if you use Oyster with the railcard discount applied.
Note that with this option you have to step back a train at Moor Park to touch in/out

A Huntindon to London Terminals Super Off Peak Day Return is £14.50
Kings Cross St Pancras to Amersham using contactless is £4.80 each way or £3.15 using an Oyster card with railcard discount
Total £24.10 or £20.80 with Oyster
There is no need to step back a train with Moor Park

An Amersham to London Zones 1-6 Off Peak Day Travelcard is £10.60 (note this is issued as Also Available in Zones 7-9)
Huntingdon to Boundary Zone 6 Super Off Peak Day Return £11.60
Total £22.20

The prices are remarkably similar, whichever option is chosen.
The Amersham Travelcard and Boundary Zone combination would cover any additional travel in London if you plan to go anywhere else that day.

If you use the contactless / oyster option from Kings Cross you also have the Chiltern Line from Marylebone which is much faster than the tedious slow Met journey since fast Amersham trains were withdrawn except in the peaks. If you choose the step back option at Moor Park, having touched in / out if a Chesham comes before an Amersham it's probably worth taking and changing at Chalfont & Latimer as there may be a Chiltern service to take you on to Amersham.

It depends exactly what the OP is planning to do in Amersham. If they are going to be hanging around at the station, taking photos etc, it would be better to have a paper travelcard, rather than Oyster/Contactless and risk breaking maximum journey times.

Travelling from Huntingdon to hopefully travel on the 11.29 1938 tube stock departure and return to Amersham
