A certain type of train I drive has a panel for communications, with buttons to select which system to connect the handset to. There are buttons for the public address, the crew call, the passenger alarm and the GSM-R radio. But on a few of the trains there is an extra button which is labelled "TSB Radio". I have asked my instructor and he didn't know about it other than we don't use it. I've also asked a few other folk and have been told it is a system some other train companies down south use. Someone suggested it might stand for "Train Safety Broadcast".

I've googled it but couldn't find anything that seemed relevant or likely. So does anyone here know about TSB Radio and where it's used?

If the stock had early cab secure radio ( that pre dates nrn and GSM-R) the 3rd button was Train to Signal Box . , it was cab to cab , Punlic Address and Cab secure all off the same handset .

Thank you! So it's an old redundant system?

This is the system in question, and yes, it is. It had more functions than NRN being a secure radio and allowed things like the signaller to make PA announcements on trains. Once GSMR was fully rolled out it was withdrawn. The 170/2s that were used for limited DOO operations in Anglia were fitted with it I think and some still have the option to select it on the handset selector.

Er... not sure what you're getting at with that - I'm probably missing something obvious - but cheers for the reply anyway!

I'm probably showing my age. In the 1980s there was an extensive TV ad campaign for TSB Bank with a real earworm jingle. "TSB, the bank that likes to say Yes"

Some stock still has it labeled as TSB radio, but it now works with the GSMR.
