I'm trying to help find ticket prices for someone who needs to go to Wood Green on Friday.

I'm used to using ticket portals to get trains to Russel Square, with systems letting me buy a ticket to the fairly vague "Underground Zone 1" and creating an itenary for that. I have also had tickets bought for me for that journey as a Zones 1-3 ticket.

I have found that booking engines will let you book to some underground stations, but not all of them.

I have put on a few ticket sites going from Liphook to Zones 1-3. Some cannot find that destination, others find it but say no journeys are available. Trying to change the times in case that was it also yields no results.

Is there a trick to finding through tickets?

Arriving c 0830, leaving c 1800, no railcard, initial information was that Alexandra Palace was unsuitable, but after more digging it seems like it is a viable option.

Liphook to/from 'Zone 123* Londn' Anytime Day Return, route "Any Permitted" is £60.20.

(Wood Green tube station is in Zone 3).

Seems expensive.

Is there a cheaper way of doing this, or is flexibility and not cost the primary issue? (If someone else is paying!)

That is just how it is.

It seems to me that there is very limited gain in using a through ticket relative to just buying a return to Waterloo and then Oyster / Contactless for the transfer to Wood Green.

The anytime day return from Liphook to London is £52.80, and two singles on Oyster / Contactless are £3.70 each. Same price as the through ticket to Zone 1-3 which is £60.20.

Somebody else is paying - it is a work trip that is being expensed. The cost can be reduced by splitting at Guildford, maybe reduced more with an anytime single for the morning and an evening single for the return journey. But with a workplace doing the ticket on expenses, it is more hassle than not doing it - depending on the booking site used. (My work uses Agiito which has a built in split now, so it will automatically do that split)

I tried checking on the forum's ticketing but couldn't get it to offer the zones as a destination. Odd.

Thanks for the help, and I think Alexandra Palace might be the more useful option
