Good evening.
After quite a while tampering with the editor i have decided to start a semi ficticious route. One problem i am having though is regarding signalling and my inability to both implement and understand it. Are there any decent guides/tutorials out there? I realise there is no urgency due to the best practice being to place the signalling last but i did a 2 station test route and only managed to get a load of red signals. Thanks in advance.

Further to this, i initially thought that it may have been to do with the sigcfg file because i hadnt initially copied it to match the signals on the route but still no result. I imagine i may need to only use signals that "link" but i am still at a loss as of how to do this properly. Any help guys?
As far as the route is concerned, it is going well, plenty of track laid and quite a bit of detailed scenery laid down.

"signals that link" are not neccesary. Those are only used when there is a switch right after the signal, and with a signal which can display the position of that switch (like three diagonal lights when the switch leads to another track).

How to place a signal:

1) select the desired signal (usually in the catagory "track objects")
2) click on the track where you want to place the signal

A red triangle appears on the track together with the signal itself.

3) move the signal itself to the side of the track where you want to place it (you don't want the signal on the track itself ofcourse, or your train will collide on it ;) )

4) rotate the signal so that the red triangle points in the direction from which the train will come.
You can not rotate the triangle, you have to rotate the signal itself. The triangle will reverse when you rotate the signal 180 degrees.

(this red triangle is not visible when driving the route)

When placing more signals after each other on the same track, they will react to each other: a signal will be green when there is no train directly after it, it will be yellow when the next signal is red (of when there is no next signal) and it will be red when there is a train past the signal (when it is not safe to pass the signal).

When placing signals, they will always show red. When reloading the route already placed signals show green.

Is this helpfull?

I have done exactly that but i still get a bank of reds. Is there a minimum amount of signals i need to place before they react to eachother? Could it be the type of signals used?
Apart from this early glitch the route itself is looking good and i have to say i am enjoying building it.

All signals are red when placing them in the route. This is normal.
There is no minimum number of signals.

Do they stay red when driving a train on the route (in "Explore route", not an activity)?
