Could you not just get a scrap 37 nose, weld it on and refurbish it?
No, structural integrity would be comprimised. Also fitting it out with new electronical gubbins and the like that goes in there would most likely be a nightmare. As class313 says the frame might well be bent, thus also comprimising structural integrity.
Rob it for parts and N/ONE it. Simple as.

That is probably the best argument to keep the 37s going!! Better crash protection than a 66... Ironic really, given they were designed in an era when such things weren't high up on the list of features!
66521 survived pretty much intact (in respect to main structure) an 142mph (closing speed) head-on collision with an 'IC225' and 1000+ tonnes of coal wagons up its ass, with repairable damage:

http://andrew-fletcher.fotopic.net/p36309003.html

It was scrapped (after standing around for years on decision) because of insurance issues, and because it would appear FL sympathised with The Dunn's and 'Georges' colleagues.

So I think the comparison between this incident and a 66-based incident is grossly incompatible.

I refer the poster to http://www.railchat.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13139#p204427 (apologies for linking to another forum).

The pertinent quotes I feel are
On the secondmans side (I have physically been in the cab before it was scrapped) the 'pillar' from the secondmans side bent inwards forming a large, heavy and sharp 'spear' which actually ripped the back of the secondmans chair. Obviously, if the bloek had still been in that seat... On the drivers side, the instrument panel bent forwards a little bit but tbh, didnt look too bad as it was the other side of the point of impact.....

The 66s have got the power pedastual in the centre which, as the HSE report highlighted, makes it difficult for hte driver to get out especially with someone else in the cab. TBH, I'm not an expert on these things but oin the whole, considering it had endured a 142mph smash, the loco did actually fair up quite well including the cab.

However, I am sure a few people on here have seen picutres of the DVT from the GNER train. It was completely crushed, almost beyond recognition due to the sheer weight of 66521 and the coal wagons pushing against it, it didnt stand a chance.
