Anybody ever been to Tromso?

I really want to see the Northern Lights.

What else is there to do? Trips etc.

What is the city itself like?

Do they have a Christmas market?

Is it really dark all day in early December?

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks.

Yes!

You will be in the right place. I am told that the activity of the sun that leads to this phenomenon peaked in 2012, and that 2011-2013 would be a very good time to go and see them.

We went to Polaria, which was excellent. More info here:

There's also the Arctic Cathedral and a nice museum just outside the city, but sadly I can't remember what it's called.

And there are always trips into the mountains or out on the water. I did hear that a German battleship was sunk nearby in WW2.

It's pretty attractive, at least we thought it was. It was sunny when we were there, so it might look less attractive at other times of the year.

Remember, though, that Norway is very expensive for food and drink.

Do they have a Christmas market?

Don't know, sorry, we were there in the summer.

Is it really dark all day in early December?

Yes
