Take the Leeds Lancaster service

Leeds platforms pointing west are up. Trains to London go from them
As Leeds West Junction I assume the line towards Skipton becomes a down
I assume its down all the way to Carnforth North Junction where it becomes an up to Lancaster

The once a week train to Morecambe not going via Lancaster will be up to Hest Bank, then be a down to Morecambe

So thats a 2

Reversals reset the count, so the Lancaster - Morecambe bit is not allowed

So whats the biggest number?

Pre Covid there was a short lived through train from Waterloo to Corfe Castle operated by South Western Railway.

The down train reversed at Yeovil Junction;
where I pressume it became an up train to Yeovil Junction;
then a down train again to Weymouth;
where it became an up train to Wareham;
finally, a down train again over the heritage railway.

I'm not sure why "reversals reset the count", so I'm sticking with 4.
